Default Carbon Fiber Tri-Props

Hello all,

Well, I figured I would start a new post on the TRI props,
for everyone who wants to know where I recieved them.

They are from Germany, the same guy who does the carbon
fiber blades. I bought them off of Ebay..

They sell for $199. That's about $50 a prop! Whoa....

I flew with them yesterday. Almost skipped a heart beat
when the prop hit the ground and I heard something fling (my stand-off)
one way and something fling the other way,
and the prop was laying on the ground.

I thought my $50 prop broke. But, not a scratch.
I sheered off both nylon screws.
Thank god for nylon screws.

These props rock, but are very spendee!
Cool looking too!
Cool factor: 8 Lol

Hope this helps all...

Hi, I just checked Edmunds site, I have a set of his "normal" CF blades, I just noticed he has the "spacer" on top of his blade in the picture, am I the only one who has been putting it under the blade?

Do you think you get any more lift with these 3 rotor CF blades?

Grease, could we get more info on these. What is "spendee"?

Do they provide more lift? stability? motors run hotter?.... more please []

Hello Yves,

I think Grease means they are expensive.

Man....how could I miss that one thanks Dreddy.

Those blades look really hot. I hope they perform as well as they look though. The dual blades ones from Edmund come with the white reinforcements....do those one come with circular ones?

From the picture, it looks like that's intended as a strain relief for the screw heads...The blades pull up when we're flying, of course, and that "spacer" causes them to bend from the end of the spacer rather than right at the screw head.

I sheered off both nylon screws.
Thank god for nylon screws.
I still haven't gone back to nylon screws (I'm using brass at the moment) after my crash. Shearing off the screws at very low altitude may save the prop, but if it happens at higher altitudes, as it did with me, the DF comes down hard. [] My big crash happened when a laminated rotor departed the aircraft intact after frame strikes. Instead of the rotor shreading, the screw heads were weakened by the frame strikes and then failed due to the upward load. At least, that's what it looked like afterward. I have a clear memory of the rotor coming off intact (although I never did find it). I haven't been able to bring myself to fly nylon since then.

I did get some nylon screws at the hardware store which have a slightly larger and flatter head...Perhaps those would have survived.

Anyway, with nylon, and especially if you're getting frame strikes, it's probably not a bad idea to proactively replace the screws every few flights!

Is anyone else leary of nylon and using brass instead?

oops! I had thought the spacer was just that, to help reduce frame strikes, I'll give it a go with them on top.
I also had an incident where 2 nylon screws sheered off and my DF dropped to the ground, but as I had a fly inside my wrap around safety /sun glasses at the time and the DF was only 6ft in the air, I am not entirely certain which happened first!
I have replaced all my screws with steel allen bolts - mainly because I couldn't get nylons in the right thread anyware (including my local model shop). To try and drag this back on topic - I wonder if the extra load of a third rotor would need stronger screws?

Thanks for the advice Greasetattoo. Yeah, wow, pricey.

I'll just think about it for a while, and keep us posted on flight review.

Thanks again for your sharing of info.

That depends on whether there really is any extra load. I'd love to have some aerodynamic data on the various props. A lift@RPM@amps table would be very nice! Hmmm...Does anyone have a test bed? I might have to see what it would take to build one.

Anyway, the 3-blade doesn't necessarily give more lift. It probably does run quieter and smoother than the 2-blade, though. But remember: TANSTAAFL. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. More lift equals more drag equals higher amps equals hotter motors and shorter battery life.

But regardless of any of that: They sure do look cool!

There is if you're the last goose in the formation. However the view won't be that good. Or being number two on the tail of number 1 in a NASCAR race.

ok, I'm no expert on this, but with more lift per rpm wouldn't you just run at a lower rpm to achieve the same lift?

btw, what is the diameter of the 3 blades' sweep? is it the same as a two blade?

You may well achieve higher lift at lower RPMs...But if you do, your motor will be drawing more power than it would with a two-bladed prop at the same RPM.

So, do they fly any better?
