A four channel radio will not work well with the Pro. The Y cable is crap. You need a 6 channel heli radio to be able to setup and use the throttle and pitch curves. Having the pitch and radio ramp up at the same time using a Y cable is a really bad way to do things, but can get you in the air for the least amount of cash.
Collective pitch helis need a 6 channel heli radio. Channels 1-4 are Throttle, Elevator, Aileron, and Rudder. Pitch is usually the 6th. These channels vary description by radio, but they must all be present. The 5th channel is usually reserved for gyro gain, which is not used in micros.
Dreamhobbies is a great place to go. Steve can and will explain what you need for the ultimate setup.

I am using an FMA M5 with mine. I am using a JR10X transmitter. the 5th channel is the gear channel, but I have its input switched off and mix in a slider for idle up and throttle(collective) is mixed in symetrically about neutral. I do not have the setup fully tweeked yet, but it is hovering fairly well. The M5 is very small, and is functioning very well for me.
