Savage X SS diffs - can you buy them yet?
I've got an old version (but new) SS kit, but don't want to put it together without beefing up the diffs first(gonna be getting an Axial 28).. Doing it the old style way with GPM alu housings, Kyosho cups, and the Nitro-mods diff kit will cost €100 or so.. 'Course, doing that I still wouldn't have easy access..
So, is it possible to just buy the X SS diffs, housings, bulks, or whatever? What would I need, is it yet available, and what would it cost? I'm flying back to the States 2moro, so if it's possible to order I would do it very soon..
Thanks..

I wish I could find the part number for the X SS diff cups and the pieces that hold the spider gear shafts. HPI US takes about 6 months OR longer before they list the new manuals on there web site and when I try to down load the manual from the European web site I all ways get and error.

people buy kits and just sell all the pieces individually on Ebay.
You can usually get things pretty cheap.
Or just buy some Nova ones. They are just as good and probably cheaper anyways.
I got 2 of them for 36 bucks from NovaRc on ebay.
Just submit a best offer to them.

and as for ebay...yes people are selling broken down x ss's but, i trawled it last week for the diff cups, with no joy. so i got some nova ones instead.
5 day delivery to the UK and they are sweeeeet.
my x is now fully shimmed out with nova cups 7000wt oil in the front 5000wt in the back.
feels smooth as anything now..well impressed.

Since in well over 6 gallons I have never had a problem with my diffs that I did shim and put oil in I will wait and see about getting the HPI cup set up. Does any one have the part numbers??????????????? Or someone that has better luck get them of the European HPI web site as stated above every time I try to down load it I get an error like some others.

Well they are not available yet but if the prices stay at what they have they are the cheapest alloy diff cups I know of! They all so come with the washers and pieces that hold the spider gear shafts according to the X SS manual!

yeah that looks like a bargain from tower. i tried searcing the on modelsport.co.uk and they didnt come up.
i wonder if they are gonna be as solid as nova cups etc?? surely there will be a reason for such a difference in price......

I think they will be better as they have the little pieces that hold the spider gear shafts from moving around. Now just wonder how long before they are in stock? Does not matter as with well over 6 gallons of run time to this point I have not has a problem with my diffs but will up date when the cups are available.

They have to be a somewhat cheap casting. The steel plates are more than likely required, not a luxury. I'm not saying they are bad by any means, and they are tons better than plastic I'm sure.

The plates make very good sense to me. Well be able to better say when I hold them in my hands. I saw somewhere some one took alloy cups and made plates for them long before HPI came out with the. Do not remember where I saw this does any one else now where it was posted?

The plates make good sense, but the only reason they are there is because they don't trust the cup itself to stand up to the cross pin digging into them. If they didn't need them, HPI wouldn't waste the money to put them in there. It's cheaper to make a lower quality cup and install the little plates than it is to do the two machining operations needed to produce one from a billet. The cups are aluminum to reduce flex, the steel plates are there because their aluminum is too soft to handle the load transferred from the pins. It's been done with great success by Kyosho and CEN for some time now, so I'm sure it's going to work great here too.
I LOVE that HPI did this, and I'm not throwing stones at all, so don't take this the wrong way.

Being I have about 3 new diffs I bought off ebay for cheap I think I will just spend the $22 buy 2 X SS alloy diff cup sets and build my own. You get those ones you still have to tear them down clean the grease out and build the. But thanks for the heads up.

Ok, silly question for the day...
Is it worth tearing apart the stock X SS diff simply to put oil in, vice the grease that is standard? What do you gain out of this?

Yes with oil it acts as a limited slip diff. Depending if you race or just bash what weight you want as well as where you race or bash. I race so I put heaver in the front then the rear and that helps the front wheels pull the truck throw the turns and helps keep the back from trying to spin out and pass the front. In my opinion made a big defiance!

It does make a big difference. Try some 7k up front and some 3k in the rear. That setup works great for me at the track. I have tried many different combinations but this seems to work the best for me. As mentioned above, it does depend alot on track conditions.

Well, I seem to have found the available diffs AND info I need about what you need to go with it(the bulkhead bumper set, and a set of longer screws..) - at nitronutzz on US e-bay.. But I think I'm gonna lay off for the time being.. Somehow or other I just managed to spend FOUR HUNDRED bucks on little dinky upgrade bits for my new LST2.., most of which are probably totally unnecessary.. That's just over the top.. I'll leave the Sav project for a few months then..
On a side-note, I went to a Hobby Hangar in northern Virginia.. Holy C R A P.. - I've never seen or even imagined such a well-stocked hobby shop.. Like a kid in a candy shop....
