scratch built dragster...
hey guys... i have a new project
im gonna build a dragster!!
so far its just an idea and it will take me a looooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnng time to complete i think.
its gonna b built from scratch and made from a mixture of alluminium, graphite and carbon fibre, which ever i can get my hands on at the time.
some parts, such as wheels and gears and shocks ect, bits that its hard to make to a good quality, will be stolen from other models.
its gonna b brushless and run by lipos
soooo, if anyone has CAD software that they know how to use, give me a shout cos i realy need your help with parts design. [&:]
my email is [email protected] so give me a shout...
also if any of you have any ideas for anything, feel free to tell me...

RE: scratch built dragster...
Pro desktop 2000i is good
Autocad CAD 2007
I have both of these and autocad is MUCH more powerful, and quite good to use
I must warn you if you have no experiance using software like this be afraid be VERY afriad, naa im only kiddin but it is SUPER hard to use
A VERY simple peice of software is 2D design
You can then use ??BOXCAM?? ( ithink that is what it is called) to load the design from 2d design into the CAD/CAM machine which obviously then manufactures the product
There you go

Hmmmm, i would really like to be a part of your project....but, if i new how to use to software ten i wouldnt say it was hard to use (which it actually is) im sure someone will help, you, i am pretty good at 2d designs but i dont think it will be sufficient for the type of designing needed
Sorry
Ryan
get some pics of how the project goes on, i would really like to see what happens and on what time scale

will post pics as the project goes on, so far im trying to get hold of some fiber glass for the chassis from another member, im thinking of tvp chassis, and looooooong ones at that...
its gonna take a looooong time though, as i have constant cash flow problems. lol
and your only an hour down the road, so you might wanna come over for a viewing later down the line!!

RE: scratch built dragster...
autocad programs are a little bit confusing...i took alot of auto cad classes in school.. i dont have the program but if you can get the software i can help you out...it isnt that difficult if you know what you are doing....its acually quite basic...if you get the program for me i will design a chassis. i wouldnt use fiberglass as the chassis at all(breaks easy) id shoot for aluminium or titanium...aluminium is cheaper and easier to cut with an autocad machine. and as far as design you will have to kinda give me a rough sketch or something.
and why dont you go with a nitro engine instead of an electric it would be faster funner and on top of that cooler looking. and for shocks and springs i would only put them on the rear...or maybe none at all...if its a dragster you dont need them because the track should be flat and smooth

RE: scratch built dragster...
yeah ive already decided against the shocks, and im going with electric cos im a complete retard when it comes to nitro... i just cant get them to run consistently... so im goin brushless!!! same sort of power and speed, slightly more expensive and a hell of a lot easier...
im very interested in you helping me with the design... where do i get the software from? download it of the net???

RE: scratch built dragster...
well like i said if you need help or assistance on working auto cad...i may be able to help....and nitro is a little more difficult, but they make engines that are so simple...like with one tuning screw some can even be adjusted by a thumb screw...yeah electric is easier but like you said "more expensive" mainly because after so long batteries wont charge or will but run dry quickly and chargers are outrageous...but its whatever floats your boat....you can always build 2 and run and compare ...build one exactly how you want with electric, and then one nitro powered or build one and switch it from one to the other and if you build 2 you can always sell and get some money back...now that you mention dragsters i kinda want one haha well when i build one il make it nitro and your electric and we can compare times.. and also do you know any links for some rechargeable receiver batteries that will replace these 4 AA pieces of junk they go dead to quick

RE: scratch built dragster...
well you could always just use rechargeable aas. and then recharge them, you can get a good aa charger for £15 that charges 4 in 20mins...
any views on the design software mentioned? or do you only do autocad?

RE: scratch built dragster...
NO WAY, and its only ally
are they cutting it as well, because i mean that much raw material would only cost about 5 - 10 quid
Then the "MANUAL LABOUR" of turning on the machine would only cost about 1 quid, but maybe they count working hours as how long they machine has to work for ( i mean electricity bills do come into it a tiny bit SEEING AS THEY HAVE GONE UP BY 300%) but all in a ll 20 quid max, i mean i aint sure how long the chassis is bout i wouldnt have thought 25 quid each for just the material
RIP OFF
unless its just the price of the aluminium then its INSANE RIP OFF
Duralum/Duraluminium (cant remeber which) Now that is what you call expensive

RE: scratch built dragster...
lol, yeah that was for untreated 3mm ally, the chassis is only 550mm long ond 50mm high...
and i was also thinking of £20 or so... i also asked him to powder coat it and that would be another £40!!!!! just for paint!!!
and i can get enough raw material for both chassis plates and extra on the side for £11 delivered... but with it being 2-3mm thick i cant cut it... ba**ard... [>:][>:]

heh heh heh, any grinding discs should do, ones that fit in your drill (if you have one)

RE: scratch built dragster...
if your making a drag car, don't powder coat anything it is heavy. paint might be the better option for this. is it going to be 1/10 scale? if it is the 1/10 scale 1/4 of a mile is only 132 feet, so you only need a 132 foot straight maybe a little more to slow down. the sheet metal would be fine for the chassis your using brushless, so it not like a nitro engine shakeing and vibrating constantly. i would use a plate chassis but if air gets under the car it will come off the ground and start rolling. a tube chassis or like the one you made will work great, the air can go right under and threw it.

RE: scratch built dragster...
dang...i used to powdercoat for american products.....all powder coat is, is finly ground plastic....hahaha man i think you should go somewhere else....and yeah when i ran the autocad....it has an odometer that tells how many hours it has run...like a boat or something....and before you turn on the machine you had to chart the odometer and write down how many hours the machine ran....that way they estimate the electric bill....but i am in america and dont know what 1 quid is to us dollars but it still seems like alot...and for 100 pounds of the "powder coat" its like $40.00 and that would last for about 5 days with non stop powdercoating....we made shelves for walmart...there big..and aluminium here is like $1.00 a pound and they give you $.60 a pound of scrap aluminium...so the dude is plain rippin you off just check around...and if all else fails...go to the lumberyard...buy some thicker gage tin....and bust out a dremel to cut your patter...its every bit as stong and as light as aluminium....and you can buy a sheet big enough for 5 cars.....for cheap...at least here(middle of farmland) and thats all farmers here use for barns...and yeah im gunna build a dragster...just got to pay bills and tuition for school first
