Exhaust question...?

Exhaust question...?
I just got my car, so I'm pretty new to nitro. Does the exhaust matter a lot? I was woundering if I somehow can make my exhaust come out from the rear, just like on real cars. Has anybody done this before? if yes, please show me how you did it. Thanks in anvance

Exhausts on nitro engines are critical. They are tuned which means their design/shape directly affects the performance of the engine as they help "pull" the exhaust gasses out of the cylinder without bringing the out unburnt fuel air mix.
Steer well clear of these "dual" rear exhausts that you see on eBay. They are nothing more than copper water pipes soldered together to make a rear exhaust.
There are one or two exhausts knocking about that look like they may do the job, you can tell by the way they look similar in shape to proper tuned exhausts, the only difference is the stinger is longer (the last little pipe that the exhaust comes through.)
Alternatively you can extend this yourself, but I think there is a limit to how much you can add before losing efficiency.
The dual rear exhaust that really works is pretty much the holy grail of nitro cars, my advice is wait until a proper exhaust manufacturer brings one out rather than paying a fortune for something that somebody has knocked up in their shed.

Thanks for the response. But how far can you extend the stinger? I was woundering If I can get a tube to extend it all the way to the rear? this way the body wont get really dirty, and It will look better....

I was thinkin the same thing man,not even dual though just one big ass pipe out the back as a split in the pipe would be too hard to do without restricting the airflow.I was thinkin of just extending the "stinger" by pointing it up and make a 90 right after it with aluminum tubing straight back.After it clears the rear shock tower,a 45,down about an inch and a half to another 45 straight out.I work at a machine shop but the only thing we can't do is bend tubing and thats most of the work so I'm kinda stuck.With this being after the tuned pipe,I don't see how it could make much of a difference as long as it doesn't restrict the flow.It would basically just be channeling the exhaust elsewhere.Let me know if you have any ideas 'cause I want one too and have never seen em.I'd also like a polished aluminum intake tube to hold the filter horizontal in front of the engine about an inch before the heat...cold air intake.

I think as on real life cars.... Splitting the pipe wouldn't restrict airflow, but actually allow for more flow. Dual exaust flows better than single exaust. The problem is the RC engine is designed for a certain amount of exaust and if you create more flow it could decrease performance.

i saw a dual exhaust on a car the was for... once it was on ebay...it look pretty good
maybe you should go and see what you can find and ask the person selling howd he get it

Ok,....better idea with less bends: What if you take the exhaust header,and flip it so it points back,get an angled coupling and about a 2 inch straight pipe and point it down right behind the wheels.Now get a 90 degree elbow,aim it to the far side and couple it to the tuned pipe which sits right behind the wheels and the stinger should be in about the right place to look real.I hope I was descriptive enough for you to get the idea

Like I said, steer clear of those things on eBay. Do a search on this subject and you'll find a lot of discussion on it. The basic points are:
1. Yes you can extend your stinger, just make sure the internal diameter of the pipe you are using is the same as or larger than the manifold i/d. Also keep the distance as short as possible.
2. Keep it as straight as possible, the more bends, the more backpressure and pressure waves which could interfere with the exhausts "tuned" characteristics.
3. Only buy exhausts made by reputable manufacturers. These will have been bench and dyno tested with the engines they are designed for to give maximum performance. The stuff on eBay is just stuff that people have fabricated themselves and WILL be detrimental to performance.

yeah, I was thinking about going these different ways, but if we get a 90* coupler, and put the tuned exchause the the rear, I dont think it will fit it there, my problem is also to have it come out of the middle in the rear, just like in the new Lambos Morcielago..know what I'm sayin?.......Galaxy, put up the pics of the coupler you found, I wanna take a look at your set up...

no,it would be on the left if looking from the back the way I'm thinkin and theres plenty of room back there for a pipe...I don't know what you're sayin .Just messin with ya but I have to order the couplers (2) and make a 2 inch straight pipe before I can post pics so maybe I can do a mock up tonight and get a pic up.It IS possible and together we can get it right so keep throwin out ideas and reasons why it wont work if any,I like scepticism.If this works and tests ok,I'll start offering to make em as a kit with all the necessary parts and an instruction sheet for people who like bolt-on upgrades. I'll post back around 6 hopefully with pics

I made a couple of straight pipes this afternoon but I think the I.D. is a little different than the header so I might have to order tubing.I'd flip the header and mess with it but without the elbows it'll be pretty hard to see what I'm talkin about.Here is where the pipe will end up being with an elbow on each end-one to the flipped header,and the other end to the tuned pipethat will face away from you in the photo.I'm not sure about the body you have but theres plenty of room back there for a tuned pipe on this one.

hmmmmmmm, good Idea..
but how are you running the pipes from the tuned pipe? and did you think about the cars movement, I mean when its bounsing on your springs while you drive? I'll show you what I tried.....when I get a chance to...nice pics though...

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound negative/cynical etc.
If you can design something that works, great, you never know, you could make some money out of it.
I'm not quite sure whats going on in the pics though. Do you mean re-routing the manifold so that the tuned pipe goes to the back of the car instead of the front? Or are you just on a bout re-routing the stinger?

Yoe didn't seem negative,and its fine if you are...I like people to point things out that I overlook.The Idea here is to move the tuned pipe to the back paralell to the rear CVD's.I'm extending the exhauist manifold between the engine and tuned pipe and in the pics I'm just holding the pipe where it would be with the elbows.Picture flippin the header so it points back and using 2 almost 90 degree couplers to get to the tuned pipe whuch would mount behind the rear wheels.I don't want to make money off this at all,just if enough people ask I'll ship em parts.Still have no clue what this will do to performance so its experimental only at the moment

Today I did my setup, where I made the ---> ] (that looks just like this symbol) shaped tubing, and brought the exhaust backwards, then took some rubber tubing of about the same thinknes as the stinger and brought it down, worked out pretty good, but I dont know how it affects the performance, tomorow I will try to find some time to try it out for distances, see how fast it travels for point A------>B. Will post results when I get them P.S. the only problem is when it bounses, the whee touches the "tuned" exhast ....
