Yellow Aircraft SR-71
I think the SR-71 is one of the coolest airplanes ever, and i'm contenplating if i should try to build one. If i do i want it to be as scale as possable, maybe even a scale competition model. The yellow aircraft model strikes my fancy, but how scale is it? Does it have the scale leading edge swoop, and also isthe landing gear scale? How about the overall outline of the lane. Maybe there is also a review out there, or someone who owns and flys one.
Your imput is appreciated.

RE: Yellow Aircraft SR-71
Got the plans for it drawn out, just looking at more projects.
I also never said that it would be more scale than BV's because he spent hundreds of hours around a real one, and i dont have that luxury. It will take many years before i can catch up with BV's skill.
But anyway, back to the SR-71...

Go to this thread for more info on R/C SR-71

I think you could get away with the engine out yaw problem if there were only one turbine mounted in the rear, centrally like a HotSpot.

I saw Byron's SR-71 fly way back in 1985 and it flew reliably. It flew like a truck and took all of his runway to get it off, but it did fly, and looked to fly decent. Landing looked to be a simple matter of pulling the throttles back and watching it sink like a brick from forward flight. haha

I don't see why it should not fly as good as these foam delta wings that I have been having loads of fun flying. Do search for "Giant Delta 86" " for the thread on RCU detailing construction of these planes. I may even build another one like my black one and the one in the lowest picture and put a SR-71 shaped fuselage on it.

RE: Yellow Aircraft SR-71
Getting back to the original question "Does anyone have any info on the Yellow Aircraft SR-71?" I too am interested in knowing exactly what this kit looks like and what's inside the box. Anyone with direct experience with this kit? Their website doesn't have much in the way of pictures on this kit. I would love to see tons of pictures of the kit being built and of it built, maybe even some inflight pictures or even a video.

RE: <span class=
It doesnt look like it has the leading edge swoop...
Darn..
Oh well.

Hi Rusty ,
If you're going to build it with this option and trying to be as much scale ...... i would strongly......... NOT recommended .....( only if you wanted to build one for static display is okay but to fly it with that option .....You're asking for unknown explanations ) . As i'd one about 5 years ago ,had more troubles than those good 7 or 8 flights before i total it at the end of the runway when trying to landed . Also ,i've been watching lots of videos and attended several jet meets and had learn there are quite few of these out there but they all have to spend time making it perfect more than flying time .
Good luck ,

1. The long chined forward fuse acts more than a little like a lifting body. When an SR-71 model, at a decent CG, gets a little too much angle of attack, the lifting moment of that forward fuse takes over, and can pitch the model up and out of control, especially at low air speeds. Your deltas do not do that. The handling characteristics of the SR-71 are FAR different than a simple delta.
2. The wide stance of the two powerplants. losing a fan on the Yellow SR-71 calls for some flying skills. You must throttle back at once, especially at low air speeds and land right away. Not doing this is a good way to lose the model.
I saw both of these things happen to Dennis Crooks at a jet meet. He ended up driving the landing gear through the top of the model.
I fly a small electric pusher one a lot, and it also has the pitch up issue. Since the pusher prop is in the middle, it does not have the engine out issue...

RE: Yellow Aircraft SR-71
I was the designer of the little molded foam shell HobbyLab SR-71, for rocket boosted free flight and R/C. You could also put a .049 on the back of the R/C one and fly it that way.
I have a few of the unbuilt shells and did a very light one, as pictured above, with GWS geared 300 power.
I probably have more SR-71 R/C flights than anyone in the country, even if mine is kinda small...
I am working on a brushless screamer version, now, a little heavier.
The company tanked a long time ago, but Quantum Models recently released some new old stock of the free flight model for a mere 39.99. (the models were originally build by Thunder Tiger/Ace/Sky Hobbies/Quantum Models in mainland China for HobbyLab, a few happened to turn up..)
To make these old FF models fly as electrics takes a lot of rebuilding.
Getting back to the Yellow Aircraft kit: At one point, the molds were were supposed to be damaged and there was some question as to the future of the kit. But, I think they must have fixed these issues, as I have since heard of kits being obtained after this had been heard. (Early '90s)
I saw the old and big Byron YF-12A fly at the Striking Back fly in years ago. Seems a little sluggish, but was very cool, anyway. It appeared to handle a bit better than the YA model.
If anyone with a YA model has a pitch up problem, moving the CG forward WILL help, as long as you can still rotate for takeoff.

RE: Yellow Aircraft SR-71
Hello Tom ,
I wished i could have your inputs about this particular jet back then ,as mine sometimes was flying exactly the same way you'd described, the nose is very sensitive and pitched up and down or even goes sideway on the windy days but flying at high speed is marvelousssssssss.............at the same time my heart was going with about 200 beats/minute also [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] . I even did some tail sliding like the real Mig-29 Fulcum ,too .............. Ended up on top of the cornfield and broke the outter wingtips ,cracked open the rudders and shrunk the nose . But i'd learn that the jet was flying differently when the fuel tanks are full, half and almost empty even though they were set exactly at the recommended CG .
