Default Which primer for metal retracts?

I'm getting ready to paint the retracts and rims of my Tucano.

What kind of primer and prep work do you guys recommend on smooth steel struts for the paint to stick?

Thanks a bunch

John

I lightly sand and clean my gear, then use
Dupont Metal Etching primer before paint

If you can get hold of an etch primer all well and good, you can also scotchbrite the landing gear, degrease, I soak mine in very warm water that has got wash detergent in it, soak for about 30 mins then dry. The photo below is a set of Mig 29 landing gear that has one coat of 2k primer and a coat of clearcoat.

PPG also has a metal etching primer in a spray can.

Hi John, haven't seen you in a while. Hope you are doing fine.

Be careful when using lock-tite on the retract screws. Over time, it has wrinkled the paint of all my retracts regardless of the paint method.

Thanks guys,

That's helpful info. On my way to the paint store...

Jack, I'll see you at Top Gun. I'm putting the final touches on my competition aircraft this week. Looking forward to catching up.
