Default Composite ARF / Motor Mount with Cans

Hello,
I'm putting cans in my 3 meter extra and have to cut holes for the pipes below the engine mount plate. One of the holes is getting kind of large, and I'm wondering how large can I go before I start weakening the firewall? I've heard that you can go as large as you need as long as you don't cut the carbon fiber joiner on the seam in the middle. Is this true?

I just put cans in my 2.6m comp-arf extra. For safety I just laid in 2 layers of 6oz glass cloth and resin. Don't know if it was needed, but gives me piece of mind.

Hi Rick, I have heard the same as you, just leave a nice strip between the seam. Here is my cutout I did, and just a note I will clean up my cuts, making them look like tear drops.
And my wires will be tied down, and a zip tie will be placed on the Ign. conection...lol

Darcy,
It looks like you had to cut into the carbon fiber strip on the seam too. I just checked with DA and I think I can shorten them a little bit, but I'll have to make a similar cutout. What cans are those? I'm using K&S 95's.

Rick im using the latest cans DA is selling they are MTW 110cc, they are a bit shorter but a lot rounder, I also cut the header down 1/2 inch, but I hear you go as short as 10 inches?

Didint I see you once had a set of X-Headers?

Darcy,
That's what I'm putting in (The X-Headers). I just spoke with DA and they say all is well over 10" long. My headers are 14" long. Plus I'm using the K&S 95 cans - those suckers are BIG. Fit in without modifying anything and the cans are just resting on the wing tube. DA says I can take an inch off of the headers to give me some breathing room back there and all should be fine.
I'll just have to insulate the wing tube good. Any reccomendations?

Rick:
You need to wrap the wing spar with lead for safety.. That plane in Basic? Looks like I have to finish my 40% before the Capi so I can keep up with you.. I'm buying the first round.

I see some people using standoff's with the DA's and some do not.

Did you need to use one because of the X headers Rick?

Actually, You need like 1/2" spacers for the motor to be properly located in the 3.0. So I just used the SWB mount since it was so sweet. Incidentally, I did need the space and probably could have used 1/4" more just for more clearance. There is like 1/16" behind the header and firewall.

Check it out guys, Seems to be pleanty of room now. I was able to take 1" off the headers and still be over 12" long. So I think I'm good to go.
