RE: WHAT SHOULD I BUY
Monster trucks especially nitro are pretty expensive, you would need a lot of money to get it running.
The only cheap one and not so fragile is the Tower Hobbies Tower Terror. For about $260 +$40 to get it running, I don't think you can find a better deal except for Ebay and the knock off monster trucks(Exceed, Himoto etc..)
I personally like the look of it, got that nasty kick butt kind of feeling

if someone told me to buy a set of front a-arms for a redcat model, I have no idea where I'd even start to look
If I want losi, associated, traxxas.......... parts I can get them anywhere

RE: WHAT SHOULD I BUY
it true that for $350 you could get other brands besides redcat. a hpi savage is $400 i believe.
but you also have to figure in the cost of a starter kit, nitro fuel and such accesories.
for $300 you could get a earthquake, backdraft or aftershock 3.5 from redcat....with a full starterkit and fuel, extra glow plugs and a couple of alloy upgrades.
but if you can drop $500, then you could afford a savege plus starter kit and fuel.

You can never go wrong with Associated, Losi would be my 2nd choice and that is about it.
Associated is the leader when it comes R/C, you will spend a little more money, but hey
what is quality worth???? JMO.....

RE: WHAT SHOULD I BUY
I have been racing Associated R/Cs for a long time I also race Mugen R/Cs you will never have a problem
with them.
I know Losi has a good record as well.
I have a Associated SC8 1/8 scale short course truck, just for a basher.
You want to talk about a killer truck, you just cant kill the thing ya it is a little pricey
but their again you get what you pay for.
The only thing I have had to replace is the front bumper and skid plate, it is
just a awesome truck.</p>

most the OFNA's are around $300 and have full kits if I remember right.
I'd grab any of them before a redcat (no offense)
Redcat if trying to stay cheap and know what you are doing(and want something cheap to screw around with), for a newbie I wouldn't recommend a redcat.

I did manage 42 mph with my Savage 25, but that was on pavement with an OS 30VG and a 3-speed transmission. The engine was tuned a wee bit rich for safety.
And you don't dare touch the steering at that speed.
A Monster Truck is mostly used at much lower speeds (bashing) and typically geared for good power in that range.
You have decided on a good platform though. The Savage is an excellent choice.
I don't own a Tower Terror, but it looks like a minature Savage in construction. I was thinking of buying one once, but having to order replacement parts from Tower put me off.
Based on your original budget, I would have agreed with Syco Venom and suggested a buggy as best bang for the buck.

It's from Tower Hobbies not a Tower Terror.

Also mentioned another option....buggy.
But the first stuff was about the Savage......an excellent vehicle. Good choice.

RE: WHAT SHOULD I BUY
Yes for $350 I wouldn't get a redcat. The parts are hard to find. Like others have said, if you go with traxxas, losi, or associated you will be able to find parts for it much easier.

RE: WHAT SHOULD I BUY
new would be a ofna hyper, or 1/10 truggy (forget the name)
Ofna is every bit as tough and competitve as the other guys but without the price.
i also like the HPI MT-2
used- mugen MBX-5, Jammin buggy, T-Maxx, Savage.
-Reverse gear is unnecessary and just adds battery load and weight-

I'd still get the jammin X1x CR over it(specially seeing its $50 less). My MT2 with masher 2000 tires on it, and preloads set ot max gets a tiny bit more ground clearance than my Jammin X1 buggy with its stock tires. Size wise they are pretty much the same.
The jammins arms are a crap load stronger. The MT2's I find snap relatively easy. (REALLY wish RPM made arms for the MT2)
+the MT2 has a slipper that is a PITA to set (have to take 4 screws off for any kind of adjustment)
JCOYNE the reverse is just another part to break I'd not bother with it.
