Default Tamiya TB-03 Build, Setup & Hopups Thread

It appears the only major complaint of this chassis so far is the sloppy steering.

Please advise other pros, cons, upgrades and tips for this chassis.

Some say it is a Shaft drive version of the popular TA-05 (TA-05IFS) chassis.

Opinions?

Should be good!.

Default RE: Tamiya TB-03 Resource Thread

Im looking at putting a brushless system in one of these.

So far the recommended upgrades are; (From another thread here on RCU)

Steering and link upgrade
Servo Holder in Alum
Motor Adaptor (54054)

Alum Shaft mounts ???
Gears and Pinions ???

That is to improve its durability for brushless.
Obviously there are much more upgrades available for 'Bling'.

Any other upgrades required for better performance / durability for racing?.

Heres some comments from another thread.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8523741/tm.htm
Thanks for the replies to some of questions I had on that thread.

Cheers

Hi,
I dont run brushless but IF I have to go this way I probably get these:

54056 (Tamiya TB03 Aluminum Diff Joint ) All in allu .. probably handle more power
54052 ( Tamiya TB03 Aluminum Universal Propeller Shaft ) allu shaft and allu mount for the front
54053 (Tamiya TB03 Aluminum Prop Joint Set (Rear) Allu shaft and allu mount for the rear
54094 (Tamiya TB03 Aluminum Spur Gear Mount) Replace the plastic spur holder

and for better handling and smoother IFS setting the (Tamiya TA05-IFS Aluminum Rocker Arm) 53993
I dont know for you guys but the IFS setup on my tb-03 do not move really good maybe this hop up can solve the problem.. the rear with stock tower .. bounce really good but the front is really slow to react and got almost no movement , maybe that because its not direct like the stock tower or maybe its because my setup with these is complety wrong..

Edit:
OK so we have the above and
Alum Racing Steering Set - TB03 #54095 or 3Racing 7075 Steering Racks For Tamiya TB-03
TB03 Aluminum Spur Gear Mnt #54094
TB03 Aluminum Servo Stay - Left #54091
TB03 Aluminum Servo Stay - Right #54090
TB03 Aluminum Motor Adaptor #54054
HPI M2 x 25 Screws
Aluminum Diff Joints 54056
Heat Sink 54056
Gears and Pinions ???

The kit comes with an alum shaft I think. But the 54052 is a must for higher power systems according to the Tamiya USA website.

CrocEnd,

Where are you planning on buying the TB03 next week.

They dont seem to be available in Aus or NZ yet.

I was about to buy one from RC mart, but stopped at checkout when two extra charges appeared on my bill.

Looking for somewhere better to buy if possible.

I cant really say for sure whether its the best chassis. But from what Ive read, its an improvement on the very popular TT01, TB01 & TB02. Hopefully more robust than the TA05 I have on rough parking lot tracks.

The TRF are better, but more expensive.

Yeah, I bought my TA05 from RC Mart quite a while ago.

Once you get to the final checkout theres a non refundable bank charge about $10USD. It may be the Credit card fee, not sure. If so they shouldnt charge you it, Its a convienience for them to use Credit card (many more sales) and I believe if they accept credit cards they must accept the 3% charge for using the service, but many shops in Asia add it to the final price youve agreed. Theres another extra small charge. Their shipping cost is high too, 25-28USD for shipping and im only a 3 hour flight away.
If they are still cheaper even with their underhanded extra charges at final checkout I guess ill still buy from them. but looking for better options if available first.

Ive just being to Auckland and Brisbane and the LHS I visited didnt have the TB03 in stock. No online shops in Aus or NZ show the TB03 either yet.

I think there are better shaft drive cars out there than the TB03. But they are the TRF or EVO 4 etc. Youd be looking at 2-3 times the price, but they include many of the options for serious racing.

http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=58284 - Shaft Drive
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=58331 - Shaft Drive
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=58320 - Belt Drive

If your after a basic kit the TB03 would be good IMO.

Cheers

Croc,

Yes using P.Pal.

My order adds a (nearly) 10USD non refundable bank charge and the shipping increases 4.50USD from the quoted shipping charge. This is for the same shipping option as selected. Therefore they are adding an additional 15USD for no reason.

A little dodgy me thinks. Dont like the way they do business.

Then again if theres nowhere cheaper I may still use them.

You buying from them. I dont think the TB03 are in Oz yet. A guy in the Bne LHS said they probably wouldnt be in the LHS's until after a toy fair, (coming soon) as thats when many LHS's would order them.

So you not interested in the TB Evo 4. Bit pricey unless your a serious racing class.

Dont know much about the TB Evo 4. The second link in post 9 shows it. Its very discounted on that site, so maybe theyre trying to get rid of old stock before a new version is out.

Normal price 750USD. I guess if you upgraded a TB02 (or TB03) it would cost more than that.

It may depend on what class you intend to race.

Croc,

OK, so your going for the EVO V. The EVO V came out about 2006 by the looks.

The TB03 is new, only coming out mid to end of 2008. I suspect they will make a upgraded version of it, maybe called the EVO VI, at some stage.

Im surprised that website had the EVO IV at $250USD, down from $660USD. Big price drop.

PS, Dont tell the Gov your going to spend the (stimulus $ from them, to prop up the Chinese economy) LOL.

Cheers.

Does the TB03 come with ball bearings in the kit. As far as I can tell viewing online shops it does not.

Im sure my TA05 came with a full set of ball bearings , I really would expect it too.

Yes full bearing.

here is another hop up I recommend : a least for the front

Tamiya TB-03 Wheel Axles 54076
Tamiya CROSS JOINTS FOR ASSY UNIV SHAFT SET 4 pcs 53500
Tamiya 46mm Swing Shaft Hard 51092 ( manual said 46mm , but with the allu diff join 46 is tight but fit, 46 or 44 will do)

want to know why ? here:

I dont know why they wear like that , I was not using too much steering at all. My brother tb-03 too is like that

Yes I expected it to but the online shops do not state bearings come with the kit in the contents list. Glad they do . Thanks.

Group B,

Thats some very bad wear going on there. There must be at too large an angle. Are you using stock shocks. They certainly should not wear like that with the stock setup.

You would think with wear like that it would be binding and therefore loosing power and endurance.

OK, saw the comments at the bottom. The wear is because of the steering. Does it understeer or oversteer with your current setup. If you can get away with reducing the steering throws and not understeer, that would illiminate that wear.

Thanks for the tip.

Cheers

I try to redude the steering to get the clearance but the result was not good, I was drifting with it in a tight place so I need all steering i can get. I replace them 3 week ago with the universal one, and i dont regret the move. My brother still using them and its wear badly too , Im gonna try to put a black O ring in the axel cup, that will probably allow more clearance. OR cut the axel cup a little.

19t 2 are supose to give more torque , but that depend of the motor and the brand too. I got a checkpoint 19t spec ( 1 wind ) and I drift and grip with it and its perfect , got good torque with it and can drift pretty easy., I put the silver spring ( harder) on it and the 6 cell infiny brush ( less wear on com, supose to be good for 20 run + ). Its my first 19t and the first time I try it with grip tire I was scare.. its really fast..almost too fast for me

Can anyone explain the Tamiya gears.

As I understand there are

Normal Tamiya (What Pitch are they)
06 (module) touring car (eg; TB03, TA05)
04 (module) touring car

So what pitch are the 06 and 04 module gears.
Do you require different pinions for the 06 and 04 spurs, or can the same pionion be used on both.

The original spur gear for the TB03 is (06) 64T & 22T pinion. can this pinion only be used with Tamiya (06) spur gears.

the .06 is not exalty 48 pitch , and the .04 is not exaclty 64 pitch.

Because you need tamiya pinion to go use those spur gear and sometime they hard to find on multiple size , I think you better buy some aftermarket 64 or 48 pitch. the pitch depend on what you are doing. 64 pitch is finer and less noisy and are for carpet or on prepared on-road, and 48 more for parking bashing, a stronger gear.

But because we have the gear sealed I recomende 64 pitch. I went 64 pitch and I like it so far .. less noise than 48 pitch and better choice of final ratio. if you go 64 pitch , 96 T is the bigger you can fit.

Save you some headache and go 64 or 48 pitch. the tamiya one are too exclusive.

So far i use APS spur gear 96T 64 pitch and a range of pinion around 27T to 39T on a 19T checkpoint and look like they hold up good

We finaly have a sloted motor mount that allow us more choice of spur/pitch use it at your avantage

Group B,

Thanks.

I dont know why Tamiya went with their own gear pitches, making them incompatable with others. Damn I just bought some 06 Tamiya gears too. Also bought some 64P gears for a different car im currently building.

Should have gone 64P with both of them.

I also have a few Tamiya TL01B 1/10 buggies (bought when on special). They have different gears (Not 04 or 06 pitch). Any idea what pitch they are. They dont seem to specify.

Anyway, finally got a TB03. (Not from RCMart) But as im building the other car first, I havnt started on it yet. I bought some extra 06 gears as Im putting a brushless in it and not sure what ratio I will need with a EzRun 60A, 5.5T combo.
I may have to gear it lower than the standard ratio.

The slotted motor mount you mentioned. Is that the original motor mount. Or have you bought a different one to allow more gear ratios.

Hows your TB03 going. Any other issues with it.

Cheers
