Hello all

I just finished building my savage ss, and have run in the engine.
it runs fine, but i do not seem to hear the car change gears, how do i go about testing if the transmission works.

How much fuel have you run threw it?

i have run about half a gallon of fuel through the engine already.

it may take a while to change gear it has to be run in just like the motor but what you can do is go to a large open area on flat hard ground and pull away fairly slowly and give it a little gas and accelerate slowly you should at some stage hear a gear change. if you do not then you will need to adjust the gears as it may be going into 2nd too quick.

You will definitely hear it change gears. It is a really cool sound as the motor drops in rpm's when the gears change.

Hi there, another way to find out if your truck is changing gear:

Start the truck, lift it off the ground by holding the roll bar, gradually increase the revs, if the tranny is shifting, you will feel it.
If your SS is a 4.6 ? i would strongly advise upgrading the 39T second gear to the HD version, with a 4.6 or other .28 it's only a matter of time until the stock gear will get chewed up, and possibly wreck other parts of your tranny

Trannies dont need running itn, they need an engine to be tuned properly to be able to shift.... i.e. if you're running too rich, then engine wont be getting up to speed and the truck wont be shifting.

Lean the HSN a little at a time until you get good performance with no stutter/cutting out at high speed.

i have been leaning it out and it still does not appear to be shifting, any other ideas??

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that if your idle is set too high, the transmission will not shift properly.

Can you lower your idle screw a little bit? [sm=confused.gif]

Yeah mine did that and it was shifting to late so I made it shift earlier and now it doesn't over rev the motor.

If this is a 4.6 SS it is VERY rich to start, i think i went close to 2 turns in before i was approaching a good tune. If you're close to a good tune, you should be pulling wheelies on short grass. By the time you're pulling wheelies it should be shifting.

Don't hurry too much to get into perfect tune. The engine is still breaking in, and will continue to get stronger as you get more fuel through it. You will be surprised at how fast that thing is once you get there.
