OTHER
get a zoom V1 u get them cheap now with the Pro and V2 out , then READ up on forums http://www.rcgroups.com in Micro helis Lottsa info on Shoguns .
LEARN get some NIce upgrades (Daves belt drive is a must :O) and you have an excellent flying machine wiht the added bonus you KNOW the machine
On the other hand get a TREX CDE and fly it out the boox .
Apparently these are EXCELLENT but a Trex 1 you still need to upgrade a bit ...

any other heli's that I am missing? so far im leaning towards the T-Rex... would a larger heli than the T-Red do good 3D manouvers or are the smaller ones more aerobatic..?

I'd go with the CCPM version of the T-Rex personally.
I don't have a T-Rex, myself... I have a Shogun 400, but I like the belt drive and CCPM features of the T-Rex better. There is a Shogun V2 coming out with a belt drive tail... not sure if it's CCPM though... probably not.

for a 3d heli (i take it youre an experienced pilot):
1) get the cheap shogun v1 and then the heliworkz aftermarket belt drive & frame kit. it's better than the v2.0. throw a 400DH brushless on it that thing will have an insane power to weight ratio with just a 3 cell lipo. you will need a good amount of aftermarket items before the shogun's shortcomings are eliminated. avoid the CF boom with the belt driven setup. this will NOT be cheaper choice than the trex. just a lighter, simpler heli with a lot of power.
1a) zoom400 *Pro* - i heard this is different (better) than the shogun v2. maybe this is the right choice out of the box??? i dont know.
2) Trex on HV 4+ cell setup. AON3000 or mega 16/15/4. will be a heavy but powerful heli. very capable with all the aftermarket support out there

I have been looking to. Moving up from my Sabre and my helimax.
I was leaning toward Shogun V2. But I've seen alot of things that look like it , like the Zoom V2 and Walkera's that are cheaper.
Has anyone flown both the TREX and new (Global) Showgun 400 V2?
I was hoping for something that was easy to set up and hover out of the box.
Is it necessary to get a gyro with heading lock - if Futaba's the best?

i have both shogun & X400. my shogun is a v1 + aftermarket belt drive kit. the X400 is very similar to the Trex except with an aluminum frame. both are good helis: i think the X400 or trex are unmatched for out of the box performance. the shogun is a great heli too in it's own way (w/ brushless). the shogun is a little harder to fly and mine sits on the shelf for now until i practiced enough with the x400. i cant wait to fly it again though...it has more power than i can handle at my skill level. you can PM me if you have specific questions.
so for you. if you are a good pilot, i would get the shogun. i feel the x400 and trex helicopters have limitations despite what ive seen in videos and upgrades etc. theyre just too damn heavy & big, power technology isnt good enough for them yet. the serious lipos (high voltage & capacity $$$) & motors you will have to buy if you want to throw them around. it's effortless with the shogun...you could use a cheap 3cell 1500mAH lipo and a little 400DH motor and itll have way more power than you can use. the shogun needs only small upgrades ie. 3d mixer arms & lightweight paddles.
it's not necessary to get a HH gyro. i recommend it though. i recommend the futaba gy240 or 401. i tried other brands and they sucked. i setup the gy240 in 1 try, no triming or gain adjustment since i taped it onto the heli. the tail holds perfect and zero drift. it doesnt get any better than that.
