Default Paint compatibility

Anyone know the the compatibility of butyrate dope (Sig Supercoat in this case) and spray bombs such as Krylon, either over or under? My Spacewalker has red Supercoat dope on it and for the trim colors I was thinking of using Krylon or similar. I also might spray Krylon as a base coat on the cowling and then the red dope over that. The reason is, the Supercoat red dope doesn't cover worth a darn. I have 7 or 8 coats on the airframe already just to get decent covering. If I can find a close enough match with Krylon I'm hoping the red dope over that will be a close match to the red on the airframe. But I don't know if Krylon or similar can be applied over dope or vice versa.

Default RE: Paint compatibility

I was lucky enough to receive this from a fellow modeler
I too am getting ready to spray Klass Kote Epoxy over Sig's Dull coat Butyrate!

According to this chart I should be ok! I plan on a test piece first

Two things to keep in mind: 1) if it's a solvent based paint such as dope, laxquer and etc, painting it over another paint is dicey at best. Always test it first. 2) If the paint is catalyzed it will go over practically anything with no problem. Being catalyzed, it will also be heavier than a solvent based paint. What ever you spray on weight wise stays on as it "cures" as opposed to evaporating.

Thanks for the link. It's pretty much what I expected, butyrate dope isn't compatible over much. If I'm correct in assuming that Krylon is acrylic lacquer it'll work over the dope though.

I don't think so. I know the Krylon Industrial is Acrylic Enamel, it says so on the label. Regular Krylon is most definitely not the same as the Industrial. I know the old formula Krylon was Acrylic Lacquer. Unfortunately it doesn't say on the label what it is.

I remembered there was a discussion of the new formula of Krylon on my rocketry forum so I went there and checked it out. Yes, the old formula was acrylic lacquer. The new formula is enamel, but it is alkyd (oil based) enamel, not acrylic enamel. And according to the compatibility guide above, alkyd enamel is compatible over everything.
