1/4 ace extra 230 for imac?
hey folks, just got ahold of and old ace extra 230 kit. Im thinking of flying some basic Imac with it next year
73" span
860 " area
10lb's
so... just started building, Im looking for some sugestions to make this a great flyer. I am going to do a few things to lighten it up. What all should i do to build/setup this beast. Im thinking a little extra rudder/elevator area would be a bit helpfull. Replace foam/balsa front/rear turtle decks with formers and stringers.
any help guys?
Also. it says .60 to 1.08 2cy 120 4cy
what would be a good imac engine?
possible small gasser?
cheers

This plane will make a nice entrance into IMAC. This plane has a tendency to come out well over the advertised 10 lb. weight. Keep it light (this will eliminate a gasser for this plane). A YS 91 or 100 or the Saito / OS or other 100 to 120 would be a good choice. Set up 0/0/0 to start with 1-1/2 to 2 degrees right thrust. A little extra rudder/elevator would not be necessary for sequence flying. It would help if you plan on some 3D flight however this plane would be better suited to sequence flying.
0/0/0 means the thrust line arrangement.
0 degrees up or down thrust in the engine
0 degrees wing incidence
0 degrees stab incidence
EXCAP232
0/0/0 means the thrust line arrangement.
0 degrees up or down thrust in the engine
0 degrees wing incidence
0 degrees stab incidence

I had a 1/4 Ace Extra 230 years ago. It flew great from the what it was up against. It never did worse than 1st in sportsman IMAC. It was tough. I stalled it on landing once, it dropped from about 15' with no damage other than a cracked cowl & broken prop.
Built stock, weighed 12.5# dry
O.S. 1.08 with 15/8 APC
Flew very straight and stable like a heavy aircraft but slowed way down for landings. It would do a perfect slow roll with barely any rudder. It needed more power for verticals though. A friend had the same plane with a 120 4c and had lots more power. Right thrust needed for verticals. I think I used 2 degrees. everything else was 0.

RE: 1/4 ace extra 230 for imac?
Hi thatguymoses,
I had an ACE Extra 230 1/4 scale, w/ YS 120sf. It can do it "ALL". Vertical was not a problem, as it would go up till I told it to stop or run out of fuel! It had a total of 1331 flights.
It was built stock from the kit and weighed @ 9 3/4 lbs. We did'nt have digital servos then, but I would definately use them now.
Good Flying
