My next door neighbor got a Bud Nosen 1/4 scale J-3 Cub from his Dad after he passed away. The plane is about 75% complete and is missing the ailerons, cockpit windows and cowl.[:@] Is there a place where we can find the cockpit windows and cowl? We will try and find out what we need for the ailerons. Also the plans say a .60 to .80 glow engine. I was wondering if a DLE-20 might workout OK or maybe a DLE-30? I would like to spin a large wood prop for a more scale look

My windshield was formed from scratch, flat material. I flew mine with a Quadra 42 and it was great. It needed the weight in the nose anyway. Swung an 18x10 prop, or sometimes a 20x8.

Thanks guy's for getting me this information. I will try fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com today and see what they have.

Bedford thanks for letting me know about the Quadra 42. I think I will try a DLE-30. It says it will spin upto a 20x8 prop and that should be more than enough.

I was able to find the cowl for this plane. What can I used to make the windows for the cockpit from and where can I but the clear plastic from?

good going Jim,I got a g-23 in my sig 1/4 it's more than enough.on your print see if there is a layout pattern for the windscreen,you local hobby guy should have the plastic sheeting to make it.glad you found the cowling.have fun with the build.George.

I will look on the plans and see if the is a pattern for the cockpit windows. Did you have to add any weight to balance the Cub? Does your G-23 have the magnito or EI.

Jim;I had to add wt.so I made the bottom of the nose a hatch under the gas tank put 2 6V batts in and it is 1/4oz nose heavy and it fly's perfect.with floats it's riteon,oh yah it is a mag motor,the mag is in the back of the motor inside the motor mount.it is a 105"WS.later,George

I am thinking about using a DLE-30 for this plane. It is a rear carb motor and I think it may be to long. I know the G-23 is a shorter engine. Did you have add anything to the firewall to get the right position of the prop hub?

Jim; I made my firewall 1/2"thick,and I went the super cub cowl so I would not have to cut holes in the sides for the carb&exaust.think about thickening up the firewall and opening a center hole for the carb to be inside the fuss and move the gas tank a little.the DLE 30 will work well.George.

Your LHS should have some .030" clear plastic stock, which should be about right. I made my own pattern by cutting some posterboard material until I had it the way I wanted.

Click on building materials, plastics......left side of screen.

Order more than one sheet in case you mess up.

I make a template out of poster board that I purchased at an arts and craft store and then transfer it to the plastic once the poster board is a good fit.

You might want to get a sheet of the next size thicker plastic too......It works nice for the side windows and may work well for the main window screen.

Make sure you get the 17 inch size....the smaller won't work for the main window.

Thanks for the info on the poster board template idea. I'll go to the art store and pick some up. I'll also look for the clear plastic sheets at the LHS in the .030 size or larger. Do you guy's have any pics of you engine setup I could look at?

My LHS never carries it.. be sure that it bends easily but not too easily because prop wash will put a lot of pressure on it...You don't want it to deform while on the plane with full throttle if you can avoid it......drug stores carry poster board too.

I fly with an 18x6 prop with an ST3000.....I never go over 1/2 throttle. Way too much power. The large engine provides the weight needed for up front.

does anyone know the distance from the firewall to the prop hud on thier setup.? That would help me alot

    6.75 inches from the firewall to the front end of the cowl.....and that is a tight fit.....not leaving any(much) room for prop clearance from the front  of the cowl.</p>

Thanks for the info. With that distance being 6.75" I know for sure a DLE-30 will be a good engine for this Cub. I think I have all the info I need to now finish the model. Thanks everyone for all your help

Jim; just make sure the spark plug cap does not touch the cowl that may cause radio interferance.have fun with it.George.

here is a site for some window material for your cub, http://shop.balsausa.com/category_s/183.htm, the distance from hub to back of factory standoffs on the DLE30cc is 160mm or 6.3 inches, using one in a BN Citabria build I'm doing...........

It likely won't fit unless you get a side carb version. I know someone who might still be able to get one

Jim; how is the cub comming along,well I hope.as for the color I used was from home depot,see if you can find merrigold I think thats how you spell it.its a real rich loc haven color you will like it I did when I first seen it.good luck with the finished plane.George.

I am not a scratch builder persay but I am having a little trouble trying to figure out the ailerons and how to build them. The leading edge of the aileron is slanted at about a 45 degree angle and I am having to hand cut all of the ribs and trim. I am coming along slower than I was hopeing[] But I will get it done
