RE: RC10 team car battery upgrade
I would like to get this buggy up and running without spending much. Just looking to play around with my son, not race. Mainliy looking for a battery that I don't have to discharge after each use. Before I was using a Tekin BL100 charger with a car battery charger. I still have it, but was wondering what was out here as far as battery options...6 or 7 cell.

RE: RC10 team car battery upgrade
If you just plan on messing around with it(you and your son) than any of these batteries will do. Don't know what esc and motor you have in your buggy but sticking with a 6 cell pack you'll probably not have to worry about changing anything.
These are all nimh packs you won't have to discharge these like you would the nicads you probably were using.

Now to the problem... your old charger won't charge nimhs, its for nicads so you'll have to get a new charger. You can do it a couple ways. You can buy a cheap and easy nimh charger that will only charge nimhs or you can think about the future, with the possiblity, that you might really get back into the hobby again and will want lipos (IMO 10x better than nimhs) and get a multi charger that chargers nimh and lipos.

Heres some chargers:
Nimh/Nicad only
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXTCJ8&P=M
Multi charger
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXAGUG&P=M
Course all these are just examples, you don't have to choose one of these or buy from tower hobbies if you don't want.

RE: RC10 team car battery upgrade
That is untrue about a NICD charger not working with NIMH batteries. I used one for years and it worked fine, even though it is better to have a peak charger. My advice to the guy who asked the question, get a nice multi-chemistry charger so you don't have to worry.

RE: RC10 team car battery upgrade
Your right, the wording was misleading. I should have said the charger wasn't meant to charge nimhs. Since Nicads and nimhs charge in the same fashion, the charger would "charge" a nimh battery but wouldn't know exactly when the nimh was "full" and turn off. Which would increase the chance to over heat the battery since it is still trying to pump in 3-5 amps into a full battery because it didn't detect the battery had peaked already.

I also have an oldie that I'd like to use again but I want to buy some LiPo's for it. That way, I'll also be able to use them in a new toy if I decide to get one. I've been out of RC for so long that I don't know if the standard LiPo cells were designed to be the same size as the old 6-7 cell NiCad batteries (I think we used to call them "sport" packs). I know there are a lot of new battery sizes (designs) these days but I'd like the new one's to fit in my battery mount just like the old one's did.
So can you tell me, if I ordered some 7.4v 2S 20C LiPo's would they fit in my vintage RC10? Are there any other reasons why I couldn't use LiPos in an old car?
Thanks in advance!

RE: RC10 team car battery upgrade
I did kinda...
I didn't explain any further though because it seemed he's just getting back into it and was just trying to get some father/son time without being to spendy. I love my rc times with my own boys.
1. He would need an esc with a cutoff or puchase an external cutoff. While the external cutoffs are pretty cheap its just another thing to buy.
2. Kids. You don't need a lipo, at first, for a kid to drive good. Infact, I think it makes it harder for them to keep it going in a straight line since there just so much power available. If your son is teenager or has driven rc for a little while then a lipo would be alright.
3 Lost interest. Say he buys a new charger, then some lipos, gets a new fancy esc with built in cutoff and after the first day out running it the kid doesn't seem to show any interest at all in it. Course, dad would have a blast and might spark his interest again but maybe the kid would rather play baseball, basketball or something.
As for your question of lipos, I like Hobbypartz.com - gen ace and sky lipos are decent brands for low cost. Hobbyking.com - (get from USA warehouse) turnigy and zippy are decent for low cost as well. Other than a cutoff, either buy a seperate one or a newer esc with one, thats all you'll need to run a lipo in your old car. Oh and more than likely solder on a connector. If your esc has the [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGG99&P=7]tamiya connector[/link] definately change it to [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKX39&P=ML]deans[/link], [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSDB9&P=7]traxxas[/link] or [link=http://www.hobbypartz.com/79p-10227.html]banana plugs[/link].
I'm not sure how your battery tray is set up but I have this one and it fits in a tamiya tl-01 with the oval opening shape of a sport pack nimh.

If the wires sticking out from the side of it gets in the way, here one with the wires coming out of the top, the case isn't rounded though like the first one.

RE: RC10 team car battery upgrade
Thanks for the response Kahnen!
Wow I don't believe I missed that line in your response... but then again I was scanning passed the battery dimensions on hobby sites too. Getting to old I guess!
I thought my old esc might be a problem using LiPos. Thank you for the heads up and for all the info!

I also feel its better seeing I don't have to monitor how the truck is running constantly looking for a slight drop in power like I do with the ones I drive
Other charger I heard good reviews on http://www.hobbypartz.com/75p-t610-charger.html
If you stay NiMh I'd get a all around charger. When I started electric I was never planning on lipos, and spent $30 on a NiCd/NiMh only charger just to have to spend the same more later getting the lipo/everything charger. Only time the NiMh only charger gets pulled out is when I have to charge up 2 lipos, and the NiMh while my nephew is here.
