Last year I obtained a partially built 1/2A stunt plane from Steve Adams of Select Hobbies. The first picture shows the basic components; fortunately Steve included a nice set of plans so I could easily cut out any piece needed. Also included was a fuselage designed for a solid flat-bottom wing and a slab of balsa which hopefully with enough planning/sanding could be transformed into such wing. I think Steve envisioned a kind of control line racer for the solid wing version. If I was going to build one, might as well build the other and have two Shoestring racers.

The stunt version is completed except for final sanding and finishing. I balked at the wheel pants but decided it wouldn't be a Shoestring without them. I temporarily hot-glued it together for the photos and will do the same for the solid wing version in a day or two. It was a very fun and nostalgic build - Thanks Steve.

Looking good and can't wait to see her fully dressed and ready to fly. I haven't flown 1/2A control line in decades. I have very fond memories of my Carl Goldberg LiL Jumpin Bean kit with a Cox .049 on the front. Mine was covered in silkspan and hand pained with Pactra dope.

How is the CG working out?

I,m going to have to add a little tail weight, not much though; plan to do them in the classic yellow/red scheme.

Probably the deference between a Cox and the Norvel with DB mount at twice the distance back.

Here are photos of the nearly complete pair. Both wings have been covered in yellow plastic film. I will paint/dope the fuselages and tail planes yellow then add the red trim. I think I can cut the red circle with the number "16" out of monokote. Thank you Steve and Bob for you interest and comments. It is weird but I am as excited to finish and fly these little models as I am with a larger 40 sized RC ship.

Will be interesting to see if there's any difference in flight characteristics between the two wings. Let us know how they handle.

Both Shoestrings are flight worthy. I wish I had managed a better color match between wing and fuselage but I only used materials I had on hand. Also the red color on the fuselage ran a little with the clear dope. All and all I am pleased with the results and both look good if you stand back far enough.

I really like that color and the extra work for the round wing tips pays off for style points too.

The stunt version flew the other day. I had a friend take some photos but they just show me with a Goldberg control handle and a little yellow blur at the end of the lines so I did not include them. I had some engine run issues, probably a little crud in the spray bar, but got one nice lean run. I am using a 6-2 prop to keep the speed down as one can get dizzy on 32 foot lines. Anyway, the plane flew solidly, had a nice post run glide and line tension was good even in overhead maneuvers. Balance was perfect without adding any nose or tail weight. It was fun and reminded me of days of yore. I don't anticipate flying 1/2A glow very much since I have no one to fly control line with. The RC guys I fly with were intrigued but I don't anticipate any takers. The planes will probably just gather dust so if any of you are interested let me know and I can fix you up.

Nice looking plane. Would it be possible to get a copy of the plans.I have never seen a 1/2A .049 with a 27" wingspan.
