WHO SAYS HOVERING IS EASY???

It ain't easy!!! (Yet, anyway!) :boxing:

But it's coming along... I think I'm showing progress... I can keep it there for a few seconds.

A couple gallons more fuel and I think I'll have it down.

How do you guys have your exponential set up for hovering... is it better to have things set up sensitive or tamed down?

Right now I have the rudder on my Doghouse eXtreme at about -50% expo, and aileron and rudder on about -30%. At times, I think I need more, and others it seems like too much. My control throw on the rudder is nearly maxxed out, elevator is about 45 degrees each way. Ailerons are at about 35-40 degrees deflection each way, and seem to have plenty of authority in the hover.

Any pointers, especially with respect to setup on the DHeX, is greatly appreciated!!!

Expo is a feel thing.
Everyone will have a different view on what to use because they set it up for what they like.
As long as you understand whats its doing for you then you can adjust as needed.

Futaba radios:
Negative numbers will make the stick softer around center

JR radios:
Positive numbers will do the same thing.

If I remember right, on my DH-X I had a lot of expo (maybe 40% or more) so I could stay in 3D rates and still fly around normally around the center of the stick.

If you have 3D rates and normal rates set up and, your using the DR switches to go in and out, you probably wont have to use as much expo because you "switching" into 3D rates.

I fly with a tray and only about 16% expo, but I hover on the bare minimum of rates (read: 30 degrees) I think this helps to avoid overcorrecting, which I think is the biggest mistakes people make when hovering.

I agree with Matt....now that i am making a conscious effort to use LESS input my hovering has improved dramatically

the key to hovering is immediate and constant response...it can be done on low rates (not real low... but low)

I have the problem of not making large enough inputs in hovering, so I decreased the expo on 3D to try to make it react faster. Im getting better!

I use 10 - 20% expo. I tend to forget to switch between flying modes so I always fly on high rates now and the small amount of expo works out fine.

As already stated it is very common to overreact while hovering but it's better than not giving enough input while learning. The biggest obstacle is that many people start hovering much to high. By the time you see what the plane is doing it's too late to react well. Between 1 and 2 mistakes high is a good starting height (about 100 ft?)

I think the biggest thing is just staying on top of the plane when it hovers...

You have to know your plane and have practice with it like any plane would, but you can get a feel for the sweet spot in a hover and keep it there with minimal effort applied...
