Got the cowl mounted, and pics.
Used masking tape to hold the cowl in place, and drilled 4 - 1/8" holes.
The holes shoud not be more than 3/8" from the back edge of the cowl.
The holes are at 2,5,7,& 10 O'clock. Then use 3/16" plywood, mark out 4 - 3/4" x 3/4" mounts.
Drill the center of each plywood mount to set the blind nut, and glue in place.
Use epoxy on the plywood to glue the cowl mount into the fuse., use oil / WD-40 on the screw to aviod gluing it to the nut.
Hold the mount in place with the cap screw, let set till dry.

Won't have my engine till the first part of next week.
So I'll mount the tail gear, & main gear.
I drilled the main wheels and gear to fit the 3/16" axles, and installed the wheels, & set collars.
The hardware supplied for the main gear had the wrong sized blind nuts installed.
The cap screws are 5mm and the blind nuts are 6mm.
I'll pick up some 6mm cap screws latter.
On to the tail wheel mount.
Drilled a 3/16" hole for the haig style tail wheel and used the mounting straps as a template to
drill the 3/32" holes to mount the straps. I used a #4 button head screw to fasten the tiller bar to the rudder.
Turned out nice and neat.

Went on to build the fuel and radio trays.
After a light sanding of all edges, and test fitting all pieces, it was time to glue.
I used med. CA for this part, and re-coated after all was dry.
Some slots may need to be enlarged slightly, check fit and then glue.

OK you are far enough along that I need to explain a few things about what you have done. This info is in the manual as you know but people reading this thread would not know this.

I don't like the gas tank tray. When assembled and mounted on the wing tube sleeve it interferes with installing the wings and the landing gear. It's just generally in the way.

Instead I mounted the gas tank UNDER the wing tube, and I mad a couple little saddles to mount the throttle and choke servos so I can still get my hand in there to secure the wings or remove the [incorrectly sized] landing gear bolts.

Also that servo tray is almost too big. I did not use the part in front of the stiffener rib, still had plenty of room for the receiver. With a DA-50 I had 2 receiver batteries mounted to the inside part of the engine dome to shift weight forward.

To those considering building this plane, there's a lot of room and you can be innovative.

I cut the fuel tray and got a servo mount out of the deal.
Setting up some of the on board electronics.
Thinking about mounting the servos for the throttle and choke on the rear of the wing tube.
Moved the fuel tank under the tube as Tom suggested.
Nothing glued in yet, still waiting on my Aeropoxy order.
Will wait till the engine is on and check balance to see where everything needs to be.
Might use the remaining fuel tray for the area in front of the main gear to hold the batt/reg/switch/ign. for the engine.

P.S.
The full arm on the rudder servo is NOT the one I'll be using, just there for looks.
Working on the radio tray set up is a lot easier before its glued in.

No, I installed the two charge switches for two reasons.
1) for the charge jacks
2) for isolation of the batteries.
Below is taken from Fromeco's web site.

["Fail Safe Switches like the Reliaswitch use power in the "OFF" Position. Due to the internal design of the "SUPER REGULATED RELIASWITCH" it uses 3mA in the "OFF" position. This amount of current drain in the "OFF" position is unfortunately very high. Fromeco recommends that Pilots utilizing the "SUPER REGULATED RELIASWITCH" and any type of Lithium Ion battery disconnect their batteries when not in use for more than a few days."]

These two switches allow me to isolate and/or charge without taking the conectors apart.
The on/off for Rx will be the pin/flag switch that comes with the Fromeco system.

Been tied up at work most of this week, got a chance today to get back on the Sukhoi.
Well the engine showed up and all the servos.
Made up the needed stand offs today at work (1 7/8" for the 58)
Mounted the engine and cut the cowl to fit.
Glued in the control horns, & now I'm working on mounting the servos for the Elv. and Ail.
Still waiting on servo ext, epoxy, & servo arms.
Will post more pics Friday or Saturday.


Updated photos of the engine mounting. 9/12/05
Coated the stand offs with Dupli-Color Metalcast.
Looks much better now.

UPS/FedEx showed up today with the MLP servo arms and Aero Poxy.
Started working on the H-stab/Elv.
The opening for the servo in the H-stab was too small for the HS-5945MG, so a little trim with a dremel tool and drum sander.
The servo mount needed to have some excess glue removed to allow the servo to fit flush in the mount.
Feeding the servo wire in and through the mount was done with the help of a pair of he-mo-stats(?)
Used socket head servo screws to fasten the servo in place, and check alignment of the arm.
A standard arm such as the SWB should work alright, the MLP arms I used, needed more clearance (more dremel work)
The control horn needed a trim also, too far forward of the hinge line ( more dermel work)
Cutting the horn down from 1 1/2" to about 1" and reshaping, then a 1/16" hole for the clevis, put the pivot on the hinge line.
The servo wire could possibly interfere with the servo arm, so I attached the wire to the inside LE of the H-stab,
leaving about 2 1/2" of wire beyond the outside edge of the H-stab for the hookup to the fuse.
I'll be using the MPI Double link fittings for the Elv/fuse & Ail/fuse connections, makes a nice socket for plug-in connections.
Also note the socket head servo screw holding the hing pin in place. Easy to remove if needed (parts replacement/repairs).

Mounted the MPI double links for the Elv. and Ail. servo connections.
Used the socket head servo screws for attachment to the fuse.
Once on, I had to try them.
Works very well, slide the flight surface on the tube, plugin and slide on the rest of the way.

Finished installing the servos in the wings and H-stabs.
Got the radio tray glued in place, & the pin/flag switch mounted.
Mounted the H-stabs, use masking tape for laying out the hole.
Measurements for hole per instructions.
Turned out nice and neat.

Haven't done the rudder pull-pull wires yet, was sent the wrong rudder arm.
Ordered a 4.5" SWB Double-Lock arm, that I'll set to 4.25" for this setup.

I'm still a little tail heavy, no muffler on the engine yet.
Haven't made up my mind as to the muffler I'll use.
Mounting the Ign. unit, and switch.
Then I'll use the ign. battery for the final balance.

Tail heavy with the Evo 58? I'd wait until you have it all together.

On mine I have a DA-50 with stock can muffler. It needed 12 oz on the front to balance. I put two 5 cell AA size packs right behind the firewall and we flew it, it was a little tail heavy but not too bad.

With your Evo it should be perfect since it's 12 oz. heavier than a DA.

Less muffler and Ign. battery, I'm ever so little tail heavy.
Once these items are in, the plane should be sopt on, + or - some shifting of the Ign. battery.
Any news as to when Bisson will be making the "custom" muffler?
What other options, in a pitts style for the 58 do you have now?

I have a Bisson wraparound, but I don't think it will fit completely inside the cowl. The bottom corners would be outside the circle.

I'll talk with Bisson again and see where they are.

Thanks for checking on mufflers, hopefully I won't have to mod a Slimline DA-50 Pitts.
Looks like enough room for one though.

Been doing little jobs on the plane here and there.
Got the Ign. Mod mounted, gas tank mounted, & Rx switch mounted.

Ign. module is mounted with cable ties to the engine dome.
Then drilling a 1/2" hole for the switch lead to pass through, and adding a 1/4" rubber grommet.
used CA to hold the grommet in place also.

Got the rudder pull-pull setup done, used a SWB "Double Lock" 4.5" arm @ 4" spacing.

Used Adjustable kwik klips with self adhesive backing to secure the servo wires for the Elev.

On the gas tank mounting, I used the grip strips and epoxied it to the fuse floor.
Simply slide the tank in place and secure.

Still don't have the exhaust system yet, so Ign.battery not in place.

The "grip strips", and other items, were pickup at the local hardware store.
Use for tyeing up extension cords, garden hose, ect.

The reports I have back from MVVS 58 owners indicate that the Slimline DA50 pipe works well and the modification required takes about 10 minutes. I've run the wrap-around Pitts Bisson pipe on my 58 and was not impressed. Somehow they made it loud AND restrictive! I've also had good feedback on the muffler that JTech makes for the 58.
