80" OMP Edge engine?
Which is the preferred engine choice for this plane, OS 1.60 w/ pipe, or YS 1.40? Which props would be used with these setups?

Both Engines would be a great set-up,I have flown the Yak and the Edge with different engines,I prefer the O.S. 160, with our OMP Sport Pipe, for Power to weight and Acceleration,this is my personal pick,lots of Flyers use the Moki 210 also,The Prop size that is mostly used,is the 18x6APC Wide, 3-D Prop....What ever you choose, you will have a Blast with this Plane...good luck,Happy Flying....

The os 1.60 is the best i have it on my omp yak, and it has never gone bad. small tank will give you 15 minutes or more.works very good for 3D dont put the ys on there trust me i have around 200 or more flights on mine and no problems.

Now don't tell him not to get the YS. He asked what was the prefered engine. That is as individual of question as boxers or briefs. I have had my GS540 for just about 2 years now and the ys is a great match for it. You can see vid of it in the OMP gallery. This has been one the the best planes I have ever had. If you have not bought it yet, you should. If you are a 4 stroke guy the 140 will do you well. IF you are a 2 stroke guy the 160 gets the job done too.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking for advice on engines for this plane, certainly not trying to start a 2-cycle/4-cycle debate All your experiences/replies are most helpful.
Regarding the OS 1.60, I was wondering if it has enough torque, good enough throttle response, good enough mid-range to work well for the type of flying that one will do with this plane. For example, enough thrust to waterfall into a hover? Also was wondering about noise level w/ the 1.60 w/ pipe. It was suggested that if I go with the OS 1.60, use a pump & large fuel tubing, and APC 18x6W. Sound right? I already have a lightly used OS 1.60 that I could transfer to this plane, so it's a question of using it or getting a new engine...

My intention of the reply was to stop any 2 vs 4 stroke debate, they are getting old. That is why I stated it is up to your preference of engines and not which one is better for this plane. The 4 stroke will have more torque, better throttle responce, and better transition. That is not to say the 160 wont have enough, it will. You can find vid of the 160 and pipe getting the job done. You are right the 160 with pipe will be louder.
Since you have a 160 try it. If you fly 2 strokes on the smaller stuff, you may be used to the way they react and like it on the GS540.
There is no law that says the 160 has to stay on it. If you don't like the 160 and want what a 4 stroke can offer, switch it out later. Bottom line you are getting a great plane that is unequaled in its size and class. After you decide what will be the best power plant for your tastes you will have a plane that will satisfy you.
I used to run the APC 18 x 6 W. Here in the Florida summer, the engine got too hot with that much load. I went to a zinger 18 x 6 wood and like it better. It spools up better and has plenty of bite for all out 3D. I have a 24 oz tank.
I went with split ailerons because I wanted to use standard analog servos that I already had. I don't use flaps, this plane does not need them. I split the aileron so the two analog servos would not fight each other. If you use bigger servos or digital servos there is no need to split the aileron.

I know this isn't one of your choices, but I'm using a new Mark 2.10 with a tuned pipe on my 79" Yak. The Mark turns a MSC 20x8 8000 rpm even. It's a rocket for sure. I have a 20 ounce tank on it which lasts about 17 minutes. Most flying is under half throttle. It's my favorite plane.

We have the pipes on our website. We also carry the Macs headers to go with them as a package deal. Please call ahead though as that is best to check the stock for the various headers.
