A monster truck like the Savage XL would be great for the desert. 1/8 buggies are good too but they're mainly made for racing and not bashing. Don't rule out 1/5 gas powered vehicles though, you can get them cheaper than you think if you look around.

I don't think a buggy would do good in the desert. Your should choose Savage X/XL, it is a great and really strong/powerful truck.

RE: which one is the better for desert?
actually buggies handle great in the sand.
have you looked into the slash 4x4? it's perfect for what you want.
but i'm not sure of how much money you want to spend.
remember than anything other than electic will make a heck of a racket, unless you are driving in a secluded place or dune i would stay away from nitro/gasers.

do a video search on youtube and find one that you like. I'd have to say monster truck or truggy would be the best bet.

Savage is a very strong truck and can take a lot of abuse. I have also heard great things about the LST2 but it is a little more expensive. Try seeing if you can order on line like from TowerHobbies or AMainHobbies. It might be cheaper for you.

RE: which one is the better for desert?
Just one thing to remember....
The gas vehicles are cheaper to run. Fuel for them is just normal gas(petrol), and the 1/8 vehicles like the savage, and LST2 run on nitro fuel which is about $25-30 a gallon here. Gas here is about $3 a gallon, and mix it with oil, and you can run for less than $5 a gallon. Also, the engines last longer, and are more reliable and easy to run.
That said, I have 2 nitro r/c trucks, and if you arent buying a 1/5 scale, I would buy a savage. They are great trucks and extremely strong. They hold up great to bashing though.
