I usually put my fuel bottle, glow ignitor and four way on the tailgate of my pickup while I'm driving. I don't have an actual pit box because my car is reliable enough to not need constant repairs and adjustment.

Yup, fishing box is a good start, I started with a medium sized plastic tool box with two small compartments in the lid and a drop in top shelf with a handle in it. Not too expensive at all. Usually can be found at Lowe's or Ace on sale for like 10 - 15 bucks.

Yep, fishing box for me to. I only use it to store parts at the house, but when I go out I carry a small tool bag.

carry a ammo box of various tools in my trunk at all times
Generally though I don't fix RC's while out of the house, I just bring a few in case one or four breaks early on

I use a toolbox, but one with a removeable tray like this:
I find the ones like this (usually fishing tackle boxes) that have the tray on arms tend to keep me from quick access to stuff under the tray or trays, so I don't recommend them:
Now the big problem is when you're operating your RC in a big area and you have a flip and the engine stalls. You need to carry your glow-driver, roto-start and maybe things like your temp gun and tuning screwdriver and even your fuel bottle quite a distance to get your vehicle going again. You really don't want to carry your toolbox with all those spare parts,, etc., way over there and heavy coats with pockets are too hot in summer, so some sort of light vest with lots of deep pockets might be good. Maybe a hunting or fishing vest like this:
Now maybe something like Pancho Villa crossed ammo belts.....holding all your stuff.....glow-driver, tuning screwdriver, glow-plug wrench, IR gun, roto-start, etc.....would work:
