Default Runs good on land

I need a lil help guys !!!

I have a 36" Cat, with a BH Concepts motor that will run good until it hits the water. I can hook the hose up to it, start it and it will run all day long. When im at the lake the boat turns into an evil beast that just does not want to run in the water. I start it up and give it a few good rev's, put the hatch on it and launch it into the lake at about half throtle and it will run for about 30 seconds and it just drops off and dies on me.

Here is my set up:

Fule tank : IV Bag with about 10" of fule Line
BH Concepts Engin .26 w/ vol stk
Red Coil
" I do not know what the prop pitch is off hand"
M11 radio w/ spectrum
Hitec digital servo's

If anyone has any advise to give me I am all ears!!!

I bought the boat from a good friend and the boat screamed acrost the water when he had it. Now that I own it, it hates me I guess. I do not have the specs on the boat but can get them.

it sounds like carbs out of adjustment there is no load on the engine when you run it on land (why it will run ok) in the water it has to work harder . is it the same prop thet your buddy used figure out what carb you have the the guys in here can give the correct carb settings get your buddy to come out and help set up carb

All that I know about the Carb is that it came on a BH Hanson High Performance Engine it states in the site that it is a WT 257 carburetor standard . (In my first post I said Concepts Sorry) Here is the link to the site : http://www.bhhanson.com/Marine%20Eng...uct%20Line.htmin the picture to the top right, my motor is the one in the center with the silver cooling head.

myself personally I would remove the velocity stack, not required and no gain inside a cat.

put some pics up of you carb, once we a certain of which carb you have, it will be easier to give you the correct needles adjustment to start with.

also like mentioned above, how much oil to 1 gallon of fuel do you use?

Thanks,

Dan.

I used the high octain fule with lawnboy oil. One bottle ina one gal. container. The local hobby store told me to use this mix with the lawnboy oil to be on the safe side.

how many OZs of oil were in the bottle?

I know that when i mixed mine 20:1 it would run great on land and in the water until you idled for 30 secs then it would kil itself. So i went to 30:1 and it runs perfect now.

BH Hanson engine I would run at 16:1, 8oz of oil to 1 gallon of 87 Octane (no Ethanol), if you can't find 87 Octane without Ethanol go to the next one up.
Use a good quality 2 cycle oil, for me lawnboy oil does not fall into that category.

257 carb needle settings are (starting point):

2 turns out on the LSN,
1 turn out on the HSN.

Some people like to use a non synthetic oil for break-in and than synthetic after, some start with synthetic (that's what I do), a good 2 cycle Synth oil like Klotz, Honda HP2, Amsoil Dominator and Saber Pro, and a few more to which the name escapes me.

using high Octane will not make any difference and may (may) cause the engine to not run properly (also waste of money) UNLESS BH Hanson specifies to run High Octane.

You can't tune it without a load (as your finding out)
Set your carb like Dan said and remember "Rich runs, lean dies"
And I agree, mix some good gas with better oil. (20:1 or richer) Your probably at about 50:1 with that crap oil.

I run Coleman camp fuel with Honda HP2 at 16:1. The camp fuel stinks but it is clean.

Thank you very much Dan, That helps me out so much. I will throw my current mix into the ol weed wacker and use your suggestions. I will have to try them out tomorrow when I get home. When you launch your boats do you give full, half or quater throtle.

I know that with 1/8 scale buggies I had to blip the throtle to keep from loading up does this apply to the Gas Motors as well?

It is ballanced, Sharpend & polished on the rear side. You are seeing the mossy gunk that is on the prop from it drifting to the bank when it died on launch.

if you have it idle too low it may die when you put it in the water.

I also noticed that the carb still has the big screw to set the idle, if you want you can remove it, most of us don't use it.
You can set your idle via your transmitter, just set to a nice idle, take your cat give it a nice toss and once it hits the water you only need about 1/8 of throttle.

Like I said, remove that velocity stack, the only thing it is doing for you is chocking the engine, they work fine on planes but they don't do nothing on boats.
Like Dock said, yes you can run them engines on camp fuel with same oil mix as if it was regular gas.

if your talking about 1/8 nitro buggies (I have one of them also) no, gas engine are not the same.

how was it running before when your friend had it?
do you know how fast it was (approx)?
any problem handling wise?
reason I ask, from the picks it seems like the engine is pretty far back.
do you know where the Center of gravity is?
if you were to balance the hull on a wooden dowel (empty fuel) put a mark where it balance than measure from there to the back of the boat, what do you get for distance?

it should be around 33% of the total length (some may like it a bit more or less).

I see you are running a 2" band pipe, if you were to measure your pipe from the center of the exhaust port, following the header up to the center of the Band, what is the length?

and by the way, love the paint.

Dan.

wait a minute,
are you certain the hull is 36inches long?

it looks more like 41 inches ( 17.5 inches wide) and after looking at all the pics, I believe that this is an F-41 Stryker Cat with the Armadillo cowl, because that's what I have but with the Paris Cowl (Cut).

I just measured it and it is 41 inch I was wrong with the hull length. I believe that it is the F-41 Stryker Cat with the Armadillo Cowl. I will have to check the engine placement and the other questions you had here in a sec. I do know that it is very hard to get the flex shaft to line up with the motor after greasing it. Thank you for the help Dan and for comment on the paint !! Your boat looks awsome, do they still make these Hulls??

Default RE: Runs good on land

cool,
they are fast cats, had mine had 63.5mph this weekend on glass like water.
with a better prop it probably would be faster but faster is not always good if it can't stay on the water in race conditions ( 3 or 4 more boats in).

yes they still make them, look up RC Boat works.
if the flex doesn't line up than one of the 2 is not aligned correctly, the engine or the stuffing box.

Dan.
