Default G-62 and 1/3 Pitts Special

Does anyone have this combination? A G-62 on the 1/3 scale Gret Planes Pitts Special? Is this engine to big for this plane?

Default 1/3 Pitts

Many of our customers here use one of our Mackay 45 cc (2.7 cu in) motors in my 1/3 pitts, spins a 22/10 APC at 6700 rpm on ground, gives 24 lbs of thrust and weighs 1 lb less than a Zenoah, has unlimited vertical and is less than 78dBa with sidewinder Krumscheid muffler.....see our website at www.moki.co.uk

Default pitts

If you do a search in the arf section you will find a ton of info on this topic. I have a brison 2.4 in mine and I think it is perfect. The plane doesnt have unlimited vert. but it will hang on the prop. Not hover but hang.
Good luck

I have a friend that has a G62 on his GP 1/3 Pitts ARF. It flies great and has unlimited vertical. Most of his flying is done at 1/2 throttle. The only thing he had to do for balance was to put the battery in the tail. This plane is very tail heavy.

A member of our club put a G-62 in his GP Pitts, and for a while it flew perfect. Then one day last week, the top wing ripped off, and the airplane was lost in a swamp - still looking for it to find out the reason. So - be careful.

Dave19,

Oh yea be sure to reinforce the firewall. My buddy's starting coming apart at 1/2 throttle. I think you really need to be careful with the throttle with this combo. Full throttle is for vertical only.

Jim,

What was the guy doing when the wing ripped off? Was he at full throttle?

Default Wing Mods and Power

GP published an update in May about modifications to the top wing for the cabane hardwood spars....I also published on my webpage my fixing of this, using their instructions.
It is ESSENTIAL that earlier GP Pitts' be checked using their suggestion....then fixed if need be. Not saying this was your friend's problem, just pointing out that GP put out some info for checking.

Regarding power - I have a Taurus 52 for mine, and it is just unbelievable. Only an insane, and self-destructive person would attempt full throttle....it just is NOT needed, except for those glorious consecutive vertical maneuvers...whatever you want to do, as far as you want to go straight up. It's kind of exhilarating.

Be extremely cautious of high power settings....and reinforce the firewall.

To qspilot:

I really can't answer your question because I wasn't there when it happened. I just don't know. Am vacationing now in Colorado, so I don't even know if the plane has been recovered yet.

Hi,
A friend of mine had a 1/3 pitts with a zenoah 62 in, it flew great however it did suffer if you blasted the power open too quik to torque roll i.e. dropped the left wing slightly (not violently..totaly controlable). Apart from that make sure the firewall is reinforced.
Happy flying
