Default New Homemade Chassis

Just finished up my new chassis. Built around a R2 trans. .125" delrin sheet. I used a jeweler's saw, dremel tool for sanding the edges, and a cordless drill. Anyone thinking of making a new chassis, i would recommend Delrin. It's extremely easy to work with. I also made some new lower links from 1/4" delrin rod. The skid is made from a 1/4" lexan cutting board from walmart(haha, funny but it works) Only thing left to do is make some plates for the esc, receiver and battery. I did a test run with it last night, just zip tied my electronics down and i think she is going to perform very well.

Just thought i would share my little project.

Cool!!!

I cut a delrin scale chassis on a CNC machine at school and have been punishing it for the summer! Although mine needed some modifications after the initial cut, it works fine. I love how easy it is to drill new holes and re-shape it when and wherever I need it....

Here's a few pics of mine....I have since cut a little over an inch from the bottom of the frames to better match the FJ40 body...

sweet. i dont have the tools or patience to work with
a variety of materials. a 4 inch grinder is pretty much
it and a cordless drill.

for my scaler i made a steel c channel chassis out of 12mm
hollow tube and cut it down the middle. i had to bend it without
a vice

All three of those chassis look great! [X(] Hmmmm......I wonder if I could make a custom chassis of my own design. Where can I find Delrin sheets like those?? I guess it is different than the white plasti-card at the local hobby shop, right?

Adale4130, where are you going to mount your battery?

I got mine at Tap Plastics here in CA. I don't know if they have a store near you but you can check the website. [link=http://tapplastics.com/]Tap Plastics[/link] ...It's kinda expensive so you might want to create a mock-up of what you want with something rigid that you have around the house. My sheet of Delrin that measured 18x10x1/4" was almost $40....You can also go to Target/Wal-Mart and buy plastic cutting boards for super cheap(compared to Delrin). I have actually seen crawlers made from those cutting boards on a different forum.

Cool, thanks. I may have to follow your advice and try to find plastic in more common forms and avoid the special stuff.

Good looking chassis guys! A Scaler will be my next crawler project i think. monsterbombs, I love the look of that chassis, keep it up!

You can order Delrin Sheet from lots of places online. I got mine from IndPlastic.com. but they have a 20$ minimum order. I went in with a friend and got 24X12X1/8" and 8 feet of delrin rod for 36$ shipped. that was enough for us both to make a chassis + alot left over for electronics plates etc.

I have a 7 cell slpit pack, i mount 4 cells just above the front upper links (I added a cross brace for the battery to sit on), the 3 other cells are strapped on top of that. So its not too high on the chassis.

I'm Also experimenting with running a full droop setup, so far its working great. I can crawl alot more obstacles than i could with the stock Creeper. I love it. I make improvements and small adjustments everytime i come back from a crawl. Improving the rig is what its all about. Learn something new everytime im out.

and i made my skid from a walmart cutting board.. it works. But its WAY harder to cut and sand compared to the delrin.. with a jewelers saw, delrin cuts like butter!

thanks guys she looks a bit different now, it is my first scale build.
dont want to hijack the thread but-

the chass was given a lick of black and the servo
moved off the axle onto... believe it or not, chopping board.

x2 on the prices of plastic. its disgusting. i payed nearly 30 dollars for
a bit smaller than A4 sheet of styrene. it is made in the u.s though.
