Wheel Weight; How Much is Too Much?
I weighted the wheels on my Axial Scorpion inside (under the memory foams) with seven 7g stick-on lead weights (49g total) and taped them in place for good measure. I added an additional six 7g weights on the back of each rim where they meet the axles and used C.A. to make sure they don't fall off. That makes a grand total of 91g per wheel, 364g total. That's equal to a total of 12.83oz. added to the wheels......did I over-do it? I don't think that the weight will hurt the truck, but at what point will weight, even low CG weight, affect how well I can get up and over steep obstacles? [sm=confused.gif]
How much weight have you added?

You probably can never have too much weight as far as CG is concerned. However, if you take a tumble, all that weight is putting major stress on the knuckles, c-hubs and axle housing. I'm running around 12oz or so in front and about 8 out back right now.

Hmmm, you put more weight in the front. I guess that helps to keep the front end down on steep inclines. That makes sense since many people use front mounted saddle packs for the same reason, but what about when you go down hill? [sm=50_50.gif] I figured on making each end the same weight so that the truck will behave the same way no matter which end is up, but I'm still trying to figure out this whole crawling thing.
I don't like the look of the batteries on the front axle or the high CG weight of the battery up on the stock mount, so I was thinking about putting my LiPo on the side of the chassis, below the body posts and under the body. Of course, I will have to use two batteries in series, one on each side, for balance but I should be able to crawl all day long! I just came up with the idea here at work, so I have not looked at the truck to see if it will even work. It may be a radical idea or it may flop, but as long as the battery pack is hidden under the body and lower than the stock location, I'm willing to give it a try.
I already relocated the ESC to the front 'Y' link, so I may as well go ahead and relocate the receiver, as well. With everything moved, I can get rid of the battery mounting plate all together.
.......sounds good in theory, anyway.

The battery location mod turned out pretty well. The Zippy batteries I have right now are a little big so I will find two smaller packs, but I think the idea is pretty good. The top plate is gone, the CG is lower and the batteries are under the body. Plus, it should run for about three hours.

I realized that my Mini LST batteries would work better than the full sized LiPos and still give me 3300mah worth of run-time...probably about an hour. They're much lighter, shorter and narrower so they fit under the body a lot better. I did have to use the stock plastic battery mount braces (drilled a hole in each) to support the tops of these shorter battery packs, but it worked out really well. I can't wait to get it onto some rocks for a real test run. I'm sure to beat my buddy Theiman, now.....hehehehe.

I've got 9oz in each front wheel of my CR-01 and 6oz in each rear wheel. It needs it since its so top heavy to begin with, it definitely helped a lot. Now I need a little bit stronger servo. The hitec 645MG struggles a bit now with the front weight

I have Futaba s9157 servos in my crawler.
They work well for me.

not too sure about the weight in the tires but they are pretty heavy. i added weight only to the front not to the rear but its a berg so i have 2 motors to move the tires.
