You can't go wrong with that engine. I have one in a 20lb., 100" Chipmunk and it flies it great! The engine starts easy by hand and has good power. I used the stock muffler: closed up the stock openings and braized on a short pipe to go out the bottom.

RE: Zenoah G-38
Lets see flew G-38 in a Ace Taylor craft with smoke, great motor, use a resistor plug in it.
Had smoke on it but not a B&B system. was a little whimpy on density. We ran 18x10 at 7000 with regular gas at 32:1 KL100 Klortz oil. Never missed a beat never died never fouled plugs, ran till the cows came home. Good engine. Still got one all set up with B&B cup mount and spring start, carb block mod and stock hub.

Zenoah G38 - Old design (very old) but solid and very reliable. Also cheap. You really can't go wrong with a G38 if "ultimate" power to weight ratios are not important to you. Bisson makes a nice muffler for it for about $60. I use a 50:1 good quality mineral oil in mine. 32:1 is overkill with the new oils. They just carbon up on you at that ratio. Shows you how long Zenoahs have been around. They pre-date 50:1 oils!

RE: Zenoah G-38
Thanks for all the opinions.... sounds like a great engine.... now for the tricky part.... I was told a 12 lb flybaby could handle a G38 and provide great vertical without vibration problems.... sounds like alot of engine but what do you "pro's" think? Is it doable or should I look at the G26 for that project..... I will use the G38 if I get the right answers.....

Dont put the G-38 in a 12 pound airplane. It is too heavy for that plane. Instead, put a G-26 in it, run a 18 X 6W APC prop with a Bennett Pitts style muffler. You will get about 17 pounds of thrust at around 8500 rpm.
The G-38 is simply too heavy for that light of an airframe. You will have to add lots of lead to the tail to get it to balance and then it becomes a lead sled. No fun to fly. I speak from experience with a SIG Extra300 XS. Took the G-38 out and replaced it with G-26, I am still astounded at the performance improvement.

RE: Zenoah G-38
I just put a G-38 in my 1/4 scale Sig Extra 300. Took a lot of tail wt. 11oz to be exact. Total plane wt. now is 16lbs thats around 37 oz/sq.ft which I think is ok. I like it much better than the Satio 180 that I had on it. The 38 doesnt have unlimited vertical but really out performes the Satio!! Zenoahs only down fall is its wt. FPE makes the lightest motor for wt. to h.p. ratio that I can find but they are a little pricey. Now I need to find a good starter. Do you have any suggestions?

I think the G38 would be a good match for that plane. That's what I would use. I test flew a clubmember's Great Planes Pitts and he has a G45 in it. It seemed overpowered to me.

Overpowered? Ain't no such thing as overpowered. If you can get it to balance and fly well, put it in there. I'd have a 350 cid Chevy V8 in my extra if I could get it to fit and balance.
This is just my opinion and if you don't like it, I have others.
