Default FUN WITH MINI3D'S

Hey everyone,
Me and Paul Swany flew or MINI 3D's today. It was my 1st time out with mine , Paul had already flown his earlier in the week. This plane flies really light, and its a TON -O-FUN. Both of our engines are pretty new(O.S.15 CVA) so the vertical(at least on mine) is somewhat limited. but you talk about a "loop on a dime", KE(no coupleing) roll'n harrier, inverted harrier, waterfall, hovering & TR'n, flat spining all-around good flying plane, then take a look at this plane....I cant wait to get out there and fly it somemore. Me and Pauly are gonna hop up the fuel with somemore nitro to see if that helps this engines deliver a little more poop.
Some of the things I didnt like was the radio installation and maybe it just cause it different from the way most gear is installed, its done thru the nose, + I didnt follow the CD manual by the book, I went ahead and installed my wing before I ran the rud & ele servos, makeing it where I had to fish the servo leads around the wing. These planes are very light and you have to be careful when your starting them because there is no good place to grab them. I started holding mine by the muffler when I start it. Once this engine gets dialed in, then maybe it will start with just a flip(that would be awesome). I also had to add a little CA to some of the servo mounting blocks, to keep the servo screw form pushing the hard wood/plywood away from the balsa. Paul made a small hatch on his of the left side of the fuse up around the nose, this would have made some othe battery and rec installation easier for me if I'd have done that.
But like I said, I cant wait to fly it somemore. Its alot of fun, heres some pics of Pauly

Yeah... had a great time with this little plane!!! The engine seemed a little anemic at first... but it's getting stronger..... I had a 9x4 on it.. but it seems to like the 8x4 better.... The fuse is really fragile..... You gotta be carefull where you grab it.... What is everyone doing with the landing gear? They rattle around like a big dog... Is everyone epoxying them in like the addendum says?

Here's a pic of my hatch... It made it MUCH easier to get the gear in.... Plus, one of my servo's got unpluged when I was installing them... so I had to put the extention out..... I just opened up a hole in the leading edge of the wing inside the hatch and fished the extentions thru with a coat hanger... Much easier that way... Wish I would have just built it that way from the start......

Hey nice looking planes guys! they sure look a lot of fun! By the way...haven't any of you guys thouht about putting a norvel .25 on the nose of one of those planes?? I think they weigh almost the same as a .15 bb engine but have a LOT of power..I have one that i used on my old (RIP) .15 shrike..i'm not sure bout transition since i always used it full throtle But it sure has a lot of power for a .25 engine...

My Mini3D is getting a Norvel 25. I've been running it in a 2lb. Pizza Box and it hauls it vertical like a rocket. I stopped short on the Mini3D build when I got a Shockflyer, but I'll probably get back to it this weekend.

Where did the "Extreme Flight" decals come from. Mine came with some real girly "Showtime Mini 3D" ones.

Also, while you're reading, I'm getting ready to glue in my wing. The instructions say to cut away the center of the wing covering, and leave the traditional 1/16 or so of covering to stop fuel/oil creep. When I look at the thickness, or lack there of, regarding the fuselage sides, it looks like I'm still puting glue right on top of covering. Did you guys just cut all of the center covering away to the fuselage edges, or leave the overlap?

I can't help but feel like I could just iron the crap out of the center, and glue right on top of the covering without cutting. This covering seems to hold just fine. Any thoughts on this?

And also, how did you actually get the glue down in there? I'm thinking a few drops of medium CA to tack it down and square it, then run a bead. When it starts to seep into the joint, hit it with kicker. Is this enough?

Erick Royer did his with brushless power. Not the easiest build he told me. I'm waiting to see how his flies before I pick whether to go glow or electric on this one. Sounds like it might just be fun with either glow or electric for power.

That covering was an absolute bear to get off.... stuck like a mutha..... If I had it to do over, I think I'd just rough it up with some sand paper and go for it!!

I'll be the brave one to try it. I'll iron the hack out of it, and try the sandpaper.

I just did all of the removal of tail parts covering, and I think it will stick good enough.

As tight as the wing fits anyway, it won't need much glue at all.

Gator,

You are never working when I fly through your sector so I am not convinced you can count.

RVSM,

Works over the North Atlantic. Should be OK here.

I found the weak spot in the fuse that cracked when I was starting the engine on mine..... second ply triangle behind the firewall... I reinforced it with a piece of 1/8 x 1/4 balsa..... should take the heat now.... I also did a little work on the landing gear... made a little spacer to keep them from rattling around... and glued em in with some silicone.... I like this little plane!!!

Since the muffler pukes all over the wing... Gator and I were callin' 'em greezy little ba$tards when we were trying to start em...........

You know, I'm all up for trying new things, but I can't help but stare at the round hinges. That's kinda' different.

Also, what is all the heat shrink tubing for. I bet I got 6 or 8 (half inch) pieces of it in mine. I'd guess that it's to secure a clevis, but I'm not sure.

Where are the hardcore 3Drs leaving the CG? I've heard an inch behind the spar. Sound about right to you guys?

what's a CG?[sm=bananahead.gif]

I just managed to stuff my battery in the nose( if I could move it back I would), but now that the firewall is screwed on on I dont want to mess with it.

I 'm not sure what that heat shrink stuff is for, I didnt use any of it

I'm not sure where my CG is either...... But all my gear is in the nose....

I used the heat shrink for the clevis end of the control rods...

When everything is in the nose, my CG falls at the spar. If I can move things back, I can get back way behind that.

I'll probably do a hatch on the bottom, about centered under the wing, and silicon the battery right to the wing. I'll put the Rx just in front of that. But I'm just guessing.
