1/8 Scale Buggies
Hi, I am interested in getting into 1/8 scale buggies, but I do not know what brand is good. Also, I don't want some buggy that is gonna burn a whole in my wallet or anything, just a simple "beginner" buggy, doesn't have to be RTR or anything. Could someone help me.
Thanks,
Justin

You might check Ebay for a used buggy. Good luck getting a Non RTR under $500-$600. I think the cheapest I've seen the OFNA's is in the $250-300 range. I just bought a GS Storm, but if your not looking ot burn a hole in your wallet, your choices might be very very narrow in the 1/8 buggy market.

I guess I'm just not willing to part with $600-$1000 for a decent buggy or MT. Too much green for me. I'll just have to be content with my RC 10 until someone makes a decent, non RTR buggy available for a reasonable price. Of course I intend to continue to hop this thing up, so I'm sure it'll please me.

Thanks for all the input guys. Looks like im gonna have to spend a little more than I anticipated. What is the best brand between OFNA, GS STORM, KYOSHO, and THUNDER TIGER. As far as performance, upgrades, parts availibilty, and how rigid they are.
I have also seen this new HOT BODIES 1/8 RTR buggy, does anyone know if that is any good, I saw it on eBay for 300.
Thanks,
Justin

why do people want to get into 1/8 cheap? its like showing up at a formula 1 race and everyone has a beneton, mclearen or williams, and you show up with a hyundia. 1/8 scale is expensive, and you'll get exactly what you pay for. if you pay diddly , you'll get diddly. it's like saying 'i want a porsche 911" but i only want to pay $1000.what your gonna get for a grand is a steering wheel and a shift knob. with cars like hot bodies and x-terminaters, kyosho looks even better

Hey JBJUS, try the RC10GT. My LHS sells it for $275 (You prob live close to it). All you need to buy is fuel and a couple accessories. The car is fun, reliable, and great for beginers. And when you break stuff, almost all hobby shops carry Team Associated parts (RC10GT RTR) and there cheap as hell!!!! Dont buy from G&C Hobbies, there prices are rediculas!!!!!!!!!

Oh hey Check out www.nitroreview.com
Beware!! I dont think all the reviews there make sense.
A lot of people diss products because they have no idea what theyre doing! Keep that in mind when you look at that!
Pay attention to lines that say "I didnt like THS about the buggy" or "I liked THIS feature". If they just say "it just sucks", they dont know what theyre talkin about! hehe

I paid $255 for my RC 10GT RTR kit. Granted, the included engine was only OK, and the radio sucked, but the truck is one of the best 1/10 scalers available, and it's certainly amoung the top 3 best. Had I instead elected to go for the rolling chassis kit, and buy my own engine and radio, it would've cost me about $350. By comparison, a decent 1/8 scale buggy (I'm using a buggy for comparison because they are what I've been looking at the most) rolling chassis kit, an engine, and radio can't be had for less than $600, and this is one that's barely decent. If you want a buggy that's at the top of the competition like the RC 10 is, it's gonna run you $800-$1000.
The 1/8 scale vehicles are a little larger, and most are 4WD which adds a few more parts, but these vehicles are mass produced just like 1/10 vehicles, and there's no way anyone can tell me these vehicles cost the manufacturers 2 to 3 times more to build than 1/10 scale vehicles. There just isn't that much more to a 1/8 scale vehicle to justify their prices. If I can get the creme of the crop 1/10 scale vehicles for $350-$400, then I should be able to get top notch 1/8 vehicles for $500-$700, and decent ones for $300-$400. Nobody here is asking these companies to give these things to us, it would just be nice if they could be had for a fair price. 2 to 3 times more than 1/10 scale is not a fair price.

I agree.. but the reason is that 1/8 scale models (all of em) seem to be a LOT more competitive and the .21 engines that fit in em seem to be hella good too!
So I think that combination is what makes the manufacturors drive the price up.
Everyone flaunts and shows off their 1.8 scale and their .21 engiens. .12 just happens to be a side!! Thats the way I see it!

1/8 Scale Buggies
i dont think its fo the rich or elite. just expect to pay a lot more. but the thrill is worth it.and the reason a good 1/8 buggy costs so much money , is because the parts have to be hardend steel and the bearings have to be good. crappy old steel for shock shafts wont last long either. everthing that the torque from a competition .21 engine comes in contact with will be pushed to the limits. the parts you get on a cheap car look the same but after an afternoon of racing your soft drive cups look like crap the axels are bent , the stub axels are bent, the main shafts are bent, even the cluth bells are made of mild steel. your bearings are so loose cuz the cheap seals blew off long ago. so your $350 RTR will cost you $250 to get it back to specs. the inferno is just getting broken in, and you'll be wiping the champane off the body.

I have no doubt that 1/8 has to be built sturdier, they're bigger and more powerful so they have to be built stronger just to hold up. While I'm sure it costs manufacturers somewhat more to make 1/8 kits, it doesn't cost them anywhere near 2 to 3 times more than 1/10 scale kits. This is the point I'm trying to make. More expensive? Yes. 2 to 3 times more? No.

I recently bought a Thunder Tiger on eBay for $150. It came to my house when I was at work tonight, so Im gonna try it out tomorrow and see how it works. It came with a Hi-Tec HS-925MG steering servo, but the throttle servo looks very crappy, a Futaba S003(stripped one in my nitro sedan).
What would be a good servo to use for steering, does it have to be high torque or high speed?
Thanks,
Justin

both type, more torque than speed though, like about 90> oz. psi and the speed should be under like .15, but if u gonna race a track that has lots of turns and it's a high speed track, then go with .10 speed, onroad electric just need high speed, no much torque, but nitro 1/10 1/8 on,off-road will require a high torque servo

most all 1/8 scale cars are imported as well as the motors that power them. if the domestic maufacturers would build a good 1/8 buggy i think it would lower the price of buggies in general. i have a rc10 gt that is probably 10 years old, got it when they first came out and it is still very competitive. associated has had a very long run with that truck and i'm sure the retailers are happy about it not being outdated in 6 months.

Just to in a little info. I work part time for our LHS and have had the mugen mbx4 and now have the kyosho k2. The K2 is just a better car. Have had some ofna guys drive it and love it. However the hot bodys rtr is a good car. Lots of parts are like the kyosho and the cars are easy to set up.

1/8 scale r big and heavy also 4wd, can rip around the track, fly 30 plus feet, and can take the abuse. there r ofna ultra gt's that r 350 rtr but the application demands a certain amount of radio gear that rtr don't have. the gs rtr has an fm radio and so-so steering servo. if u want 2 step up 2 1/8th scale cheap you're better off getting something used than a new rtr.
