Default DA 50 in Dave Patrick Ultimate??

I have the DP Ultimate (120 size) and really like flying it. Right now I have a YS 140DZ in it and its plenty of power. It just cost pretty much to fly it all the time on 25%, and it sucks a lot of gas when flying it, plus I like gas powered planes better over glow.
There are a lot of similar sized Ultimates that recommend a 50Cc, (Aeroworks, Wildhare, World Models, etc? How about a DA 50 in this one? Anyone ever try it? I have a DA 50 in my Extra 330 and its an awesome motor, I might even like it more then my 150. So would it be a good idea to sell the YS and get a DA??

Ryan... I don't have a DP but my friend does. He originally had a BME 40 in it and switched to the DA. Boy, what a difference. He's very happy with the change and the power of the 50. The only issue he had was the prop clearance. DP's have pretty low landing gear. Like I said, I don't have one but I've seen one fly at least 100 times... And it flys great.

What size prop is on it? I was thinking about ground clearance already to. I have an 18x6 now on the YS. My Extra I use a 24x8 with the DA 50, but I saw some with a 22x8 which would work on the Ultimate with good results.

Ryan,

I'd say your first concern would be CG. DA 50 is at least 1 lb. heavier than YS 140 DZ, and my DP Ultimate is already pretty nose heavy w/ YS 140 DZ. I needed to put battery pack at the tail and remove wheel pants just to get the CG to a good setting. With a DA 50 up there, I don't know...

If you are tired of burning expensive gas, maybe a fuel-economical glow 2-stroke like the OS 160 FX or 3M 170.

You will have to move the rudder and elevator servos in the tail to get the balance right.

I already have the elevator servos in the tail under the stab. The Ultimate is a tad tail heavy with the YS. It does a great flat spin,so with the DA it should balance ok.

Is the rudder servo in the tail as well? If not it probably will need to go there. Isn't the DA about a pound heavier than the YS?

I am thinking about this combo as well. I need all the power I can get at 6000 ft. But first I am going to experiemnt with bolly props on my YS 1.40 DZ

A little more than 13 lbs. I haven't tried some weightsaving yet but it seems I have to go that route for sure.

Could you post some pics of your set-up. Ive had this plane in a box in the basement for a couple of years and I would really like to put it together. I bought it with the intention of going gas, but everyone said no way, you cant do that. So its just sat on the shelf all this time. Im particularly interested in pics of how you stuck the servos in the tail. Any other help you could give me would be really appreciated. Thanks

I will try to get some better pictures tomorrow. I have some but they are kinda bad in the tail. I just cut out for the servos in the tail, re inforced it where the servo goes in. Wasn't hard to do. I might keep this plane to try a DA 50,it should stay together, but playing with the idea to get an Ultimate made for a 50.
More pictures to come. You can go to .... for more pics too. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/flying...yann/my_photos

I had this plane with a Saito 150 and it was great, my buddy had it with a Saito 180 and it was unlimited. As I recall weight was around 10.5 lbs. A gasser in this plane will be a mistake in my opinion. If I wanted a gasser ulimate I would buy one of the 50 size planes out there. I went from my DP ulty to my CH DV because there were not any 50 size ultys available yet.

how does everyone get a 10.5 lbs ultimate?? 11.5 is a possibility but 10.5 is crazy. Were there some design revisions on the newer utlys? I got mine in late 2003. anyone know?

I think they were redesigned. Mine was from the first run a few years ago.

hi
search nazi here, there are several threads available on gas conversion for this plane. Last one I remember had a ZDZ40 but very similar weight and install. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/DP_U...1282177/tm.htm
try the search on the ARF forum too as the DP planes are mostly sold as ARFs...
I bought mine from a guy who intented to go gas but decided to bail on the project. I will say it wont be pretty as the cowl is tight for a glow engine, an inverted gasser will very exposed.
I recently got a DP Extra ARC and think its worth the effort to cover your own as I believe I will be able to get a pound or more out of the airframe. Flying a lot of electric stuff I've learned there is NO substitute for low weight, I dont have time for good flying planes, but I do have time for exceptional planes...

I think a DA 50 in this plane would be overkill. I have a MDS 1.40 and hover at 1/2 throttle. My ship weighs 11.8 lbs dry and power is not a problem. I would be afraid of hurting the airframe and expecially the wings. They aren't build all too rugged. Too much power would probably rip them off. Bipes tend to do everything at half the speed anyhow because of the lift. More power just means more noise in these birds.

My .02

yank (as in Northern Air Farce)

Hi all, currently I'm building a 73 inch Ultimate, specially made for the DA50. When you're interested you can go to http://www.emhw.de/
They have really great Ultimates.

Ryan---- Did you do any renforcing to the tail area that you put the servos in for the elevator?

no, i just used regular push rods instead of the kevlar string or whatever it was for the tail bracing. Im sticking with the YS 140. The motor runs very good and has plenty of power for the Ultimate, and a good match.

The DA50 may compensate for the thinner air at 7,000 feet.
