Bored? Set your muffler on fire!
With it being a very miserable rainy day with no chance of flying, I needed to keep myself occupied. I have polished a few mufflers on my planes so they look real nice, but today I wanted to do something different. After a quick survey of the shop I decided to polish the muffler from a TT 42 engine off my old reliable plane. This muffler was beginning to look a little tired, so it was the perfect candidate. I busted out the Dremel and ground off some of the fins so I could dress her up a little bit. After the fins were ground down I went through the usual routine of hand sanding with progressively finer grits until it had a nice little polish on it. After finished with hand sanding I polished it with some aluminum polish until it started to resemble chrome. I swiped a sharpie from my wife and sketched a few designs right on the muffler. Once I found one I was happy with, I took the Dremel out again and traced the outline with the edge of a small grining bit. This was a little difficult as it was not the perfect tool for this job, but it's what was in the shop. After I was somewhat satisfied with the outline, I used the flat side of the same grinding stone to etch the remaining area of the muffler. All of the above took about 2 - 2.5 hours, it would have been quicker, but I had to walk the dog. I think for such a small amount of time invested, I am pretty happy with the results. What do you guys think?

Yep ! you are bored .... But very nice graphic work.
How did you know it was going to shine after all of the grinding or was it polished aluminum already ?
