Default JR 1221 setup for F18?

Hi guys,

I have a new 12x/1221 to put in my Hornet. I have a few questions though...

1) Can I use the "Dual" function with the Flap system and Wing type (Flaperon?) for getting
two servos for each channel output (while using onely one servo per surface)?
I was not sure if the "dual" setting will allow opposite servo direction (elevators, flaps etc.)
If this works it would seem that I would not need any matchboxes etc>

2) What battery combination ( and/or voltage regulator) has been used with success for the 1221 and two battery inputs? I will be using 8711/8611a/3421.
I would like to try and avoid a powerbox as the receiver is rated for 35 amps I think and should be fine to use the reciver alone.
I was thinking of two LiMN 3000 with regulators....

Thanks in advance!

Dave

Dave,

In both my Hornets, I'm running exactly what you are. I'm using the dual flap system(you can reverse any servo on its appropriate channel as you see fit)

I'm using the smart fly turbo regulator with 2 2200 Thunder Power lipo's.

Yes Raf is right, you are good to go. I'm using that exact setup with my Hog and my Bug. Two matched batteries going into the Rx and you are good to go.

Just wanted to confirm that you are using wing type=flaperon?
Thanks again,

Dave, I recently pulled out all of the matchboxes I was using when I converted to the 12X because I also changed to the A-123 batteries. Fully charged voltage running un-regulated is 6.7 volts for the A-123 packs. Many components are rated at 6.0 volts but matchboxes are only rated at 4.8 volts.

I ran them for a while with the A-123's but it was making me a little nervous. I have seen the fully charged A-123 packs up to 6.9 volts and I thought it might be pushing the matchboxes a little. Just a thought if you decide to use them for anything with the A-123's, especially control surfaces...Gary

Thanks Gary.

Sorry I didn't see you this summer! I have thought about a123 but am trying to keep the fleet with similar stuff for a few years at a time. Interesitng about the matchbox, I am not sur eI knew that and have flown about 500 flights on my 40% 540 with 5 cell NiMH usually at about 6.8-7.0 volts off the charger with no matchbox problems so far....
I also have two in the Hornet with the same batteries ...good to know though as I plan to get rid of them too! I would like to avoid needing a regulator if possible. Any trouble with the servos running at 6.7 volts?

Thanks
Dave

Joe and Raf,

I know this may sound silly but what switches are you using? It seems that the 1221 does not have the fail-on switch like the 922? Are you simply using a swtich like we have always done with 72Mhz receivers? I usually just use the JR HD switch but am not certain of the amp rating of that switch.

Thanks
Dave

match box ok w/ 6.0v

JR MatchBox

JR's MatchBox lets you synchronize the neutrals, endpoints and reversing of up to 4 servos from a single receiver channel, power them with their own dedicated battery pack and cut your setup time to mere minutes.

Until digital servos came along, driving a single control surface with 2 or more servos wasn't all that difficult. If they fought each other a tiny bit, it wasn't the end of the world.

But when ganged digital servos aren't perfectly matched – or if horn geometry is slightly off – look out. Current drain can soar and surfaces strain as each servo battles to hold its position.

Enter, the MatchBox. Besides offering convenient servo matching, MatchBoxes can reduce the need to multi-channel mixing, prevent voltage drops to the receiver, and even eliminate the use of second receivers as nothing more than expensive bus bars. Which all adds up to a list of benefits programmable servos alone simply can't deliver.

Size: 1.54" x 0.75" x 0.50" Weight: 0.32 oz (9.072 g) Voltage: 4.8 - 6.0V

recommend either the Fromeco switches, or the JR HD switch, however any good HD switch will work for 1221 with JR outputs. Use only HD stuff in jets.. twin packs/switches or twin packs with wolverine

If yo build the power system to the same standards you use for Giant scale aerobatics, you will be good.

I am running fromeco LiFe, and A123's now in just about everything with no regs. little birds, glow birds, giant scale and my jet. I have not had any servo issues yet, nor matchbox issues as of yet. I use both hitec and JR servos, but I am really a new guy only being back 3 years. so maybe other opinions are good

I dont have my radio handy but I think you need to set it up as wing type normal and set up a mix of aileron to FR0. I cant recall the exact settings but there is a function that will allow normal flap operation in the extended setting, and full flaperons with the flap switch up, because I did it with an ugly stick last week. I used the flap switch to activate the mix.

There should be just enough channels for the dual flap system
4 channels on the wings
2 rudders
2 elevators
nose steer separate.

One more question:

1) ARe you (Joe and Raf and any others..) usinf the Smartsafe or Failsafe feature? I am assuming that you only program ONe or the Other. I was leaning towards failsafe for the purposes of the throttle/learn setup for the jetcat ECU and throttle failsafe...

2)Also, are you usinf 50% or 75% for your failsafe throttle setting with the 1221? I have seen a few threads that mentioned needing 50% versus 75% and have not tried this yet on the 1221. I have always done per the maual when using 72MHz.

Thanks again for your help,
Dave

Rav,

If you are suing the dual servo function for elev, ail, flap, rudder - were you short one channel for brakes? I am using a door valve and steering and no more channels for the brake at the moment. Wonderinf if I need a matchbox or a Y?

Joe,
Hoe are you plugging allof your flaps into the 1221? Y or matchbox?

Thanks guys!

I believe I Y'd the rudders and ran the steering servo on its own channel for trimming on the ground. Hope that free's up a channel.

Dave,

Just use the Smartsafe unless you want some other channel(s) to go to a pre-set position in addition to the throttle. The throttle will go to whatever position (idle/low trim) you set during the last bind, while all others will just "hold" with Smartsafe.

In another thread, John Redman recommends setting your throttle throws to 50% vs 75% for your JetCat setup.

Craig

PS: Quit screwing with that F-18 and get going with the Hog!

Thanks Raf and Craig.
I just wanted to make sure I was not missing something obvious..

Craig, I have ben working on the Hog! Got the cockpit set, canopy cut/trimmed, gun is on, pave penny, ventral strakes, nose doors with the new hinges...Nacelles are next and then I need to pressure test the retracts, then fill/sand/paint! Still is going to be tough to get this done by 09 season for me though unless I can get someone to paint it around March....

Thanks again for the advice.
Dave
