Default Traxxas Summit Gearing Questions

Ok for those in the know, what gearing shuold I get to maximize top end speed on a otherwise stock Summit running 2 7cell NiMh?

I havent bought the truck yet but have decided its the one for me. I dont want to go lipo at this time, but i just want to get a little more top speed capability by changine out the Pinon and Spur. I know Traxxas makes a few different ones. I just dont know which ones makes it go faster.

Also after we determine which set-up is best for highest speed (I know i'll loose some low-end), what kidn pf MPH can i geat with gearing and 7 cell 5000 Nimh's batts?

Thanks

smaller spur and larger pinion make it go faster (provided it has enough power to pull it)

OK thanks Guver - so according out of the choices Traxxas offers in Spur Gears for the Summit are 68t (stock), 65t and 62t. So i should switch to 62-tooth spur. What Pinon should I run? dont see an accessory option for pinion from Traxxas.

Spur Gears
Optional Traxxas Summit spur gears allow you to increase or decrease the final drive ratio and tune for different applications. The out-of-the-box spur gear is a 68-tooth.

Part #3961 Spur Gear, 68-Tooth (0.8 metric pitch) (stock)

Part #3959 Spur Gear, 62-Tooth (0.8 metric pitch)

Part #3960 Spur Gear, 65-Tooth (0.8 metric pitch)

Run the largest pinion that'll fit if your truck has enough power to pull the heavier load. For high speed runs a nice thing about a small spur is that it allows a bigger pinion usually.

ok problem is i dont know how big to go on pinion cause i dont know if the truck has the power to pull the load.

Hoping some Summit owners who have tinkered with gearing will chime in!

I have a summit and have tried 18t and 20t they have enough to pull the truck but you have to watch temperatures. Those pinions will get you top speed around 20-25mph. If you want more you will need lipo and brushless.

Thanks Tmaxx. What Pinion is Stock? Also did you try a lower Spur gear? Say 62t?

Trying to get to at least 25 mph without having to go brushless. I dont want an emaxx. I love everything about the Summit, just want a lil more top end speed.

Tmaxx 33 - 14t Pinon is stock on Summit. I guess Ill try a 18t then go down to 62t spur or lower and watch the temps

just to let you know... the summit is meant to be a climbing truck. off roader not really something with a high top speed so i would be careful how you drive when you go full throttle.<div>also the basic idea of gearing is that a small gear on a big gear = power and a big gear on a small gear = speed.  but of course you cant do big on small b/c then i dont think the truck would even move b/c then the engine wouldn't have enough torque.  personally i would go with the 62t spur and somthing like an 18t or 20t pinion.  also lower the pushrods on your truck to lower the COG for better handling </div>

ok thanks ill just try some diff set-ups. im thinking 18t/62t as well. I know the summit's forte is not high speed. I dont want it to be high speed. i just cant leave anything alone lol.
