Anyone have a recommendation on this setup for an Goldberg ULTIMATE? ANYONE???????????
I figured I'd try AGAIN in this particular forum since no one fully answered me in another. Does ANYONE have recommendations about using the OS FS 120III w/pump vs. one without? Is there a marked performance increase? SPECIFICALLY, I got an Ultimate this Xmas and was thinking of using one of the two previously mentioned engines with it. Would they be enough muscle to power the Ultimate with a smoke system? I've read that the Ultimates tend to build heavy (don't know how true this is) and I know that these smoke systems add some significant weight with battery, pump and all. Anyone recommend the Saitos or YS's over these OS engines? Someone in another forum said the YS's are pretty nice but that was all I got.Thanks.

DB,
A friend of mine has a Goldberg Utimate with a 120 on it (no pump) and he flies the wings off the thing. I beleive he has a glow driver on it, but no smoke system. I will try to get in touch with him and see if he thinks it is heavy or not. I don't recall it acting like it was underpowered, but it was a couple of years ago. All the Goldbergs I have built have the tail section constructed from sticks (Eaglet 50s and J-3 Cubs) not planks of balsa. Since I haven't personally built the Ultimate, I'm not sure about it. In my experience, Goldberg models are sturdy, well designed kits. Like I said, I will see if I can get in touch with him and find out some info for you.

Sorry, Dive I must have missed you asking the first time. I have flown two 1.20 powered Ultimates. One was Enya 1.20 4-stroke with smoke. it did not feel heavy on the sticks as long as it was under power. If it died though hang on. Even on high rate elevator you better be looking for a place to land. It once died on me at 150ft
while inverted. by the time I rolled it over and made a turn it was to late. It had lost all but 40ft of the altitude
and landed hard diving at a 45 degree angle and put both wheels through the bottem wing. It was an easy fix as the fuse on these planes are tough. The other was 1.20 Surpase powered with out smoke. Under power both planes flew great , but the one with out smoke landed easyer and slower. If you incist on using smoke mount everything for the smoke on one piece of ply . Then secure it inside with screws right on the C.G. That way you can fly it with or without the smoke. As far as engine brand. The O.S. and Saito are very close in price & power. i prefer Saito but it's just a personal choice. The Y.S. is a more powerfull engine. It also has a bigger price tag and is a little more tempermental. Either way you go this plane is a blast to fly and you will enjoy it. i hope this helps.

Ive got a C.G. Ultimate!!! Great plane!!! I fly it hard and its never let me down before(knock on wood)!!! i recently entered it in a ( IMAC) national event here in the philippines and took home 3rd place. I have set up my ulitimate for 3d and have the throws at almost 50deg. elevator and Rudder. Thats for torque rolls water falls etc. but if you want great snaps ive found that 3d rates are just too much. Try approx 25deg. elevator and 30deg rudder!!! As for aileron I dont change it from hi to low i just add alot of expo so that its not jittery to fly. i use a simple 1.08 glow engine futaba 9101, and JR ds811 servos. I also used a pitts style muffler. I dont fly it with smoke!! althought theres a lot of room on the CG area for iT, i prefer to fly with lesser weight. this because i think the Ultimate is not a good floater. My engine ran out of fuel once and i was pretty high maybe 300-350 feet and she still came down like a Rock!!! However she never stalled on me i just eased up on elevator and she came down fast but landed gently!!! I would like to suggest you use soft mounts as the bolts on the cabane struts might come lose.

Ultimate Bipe
I also fly a different version of the bipe.
It is very sensitive to aileron and elevator.
I use about 1/4" diflection for aileron
1/2" for elevator
These are the normal rates. I add 1/8" for high rate.
CAUTION: the bipe with extra drag glides like a stone. If the engine quits don't diddle around with pattern. Turn directly to the field and land.
Keep the speed up high on dead stick or you will quickly find out how fast it will snap roll.
It is a great plane under power, Use a RELIABLE engine. Mine will snap roll under full throttle take off and then go vertical. I have flown my son's who had 2 dead sticks and he made the field. I also helped another flier who I gave the same advice to, and his next flight he dead sticked. He said, "directly aiming at the field saved the plane"
Great plane.. Have fun with it, and don't under power. At least a 1.2 4 stroke.. vettdvr

I had one for years flying on a super tiger 90. Had lots of vertical and was a few ounces lighter than those equipped with four strokes. I did dead stick a couple times and everyone is right, don't mess around. I also found that the standard aileron struts were too weak...I used aluminum airfoil shaped tubing with 4-40 threads, JB welded into each end. Enjoy, this plane will do beautiful knife edge loops!
