What to use for J3 cub
I have a modeltech J3 cub with 48 inch wingspan and 360 sq inch wing area that weighs 3.2 pounds. I am totally new to electrics and have no idea of what will power this plane. It doesn't have to be a powerhouse, but I don't want just a circut flyer either. I want to fly as long as possible within reason. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chuck.

3.2 pounds empty or ready to fly as a glow plane?
At 3.2 pounds RTF, I would expect you to be quite happy with a 3S LiPoly (11.1V) with about 4000mAh worth of capacity (i.e. 3S2P ThunderPower 4200, or even just a 3S Kokam 3200), an AXi 2820/10, and a 10x8 prop.

RE: What to use for J3 cub
Thanks Matt,
I think the 3.2 is empty, but it doesn't say and I don't have a scale handy. It's not fully assembled yet anyway. I was looking for some input on it since I have no electric experience except my Flatana, and it's been too windy to maiden it yet. At least I was in the right area, I was debating on whether to go with the AXi 2820/10 or if the AXi 2820/12 would be too much.

RE: What to use for J3 cub
chammond, I have an AK Models J3 Cub that is almost 3 lbs. ready to fly weight. It has a 50 inch wingspan. I converted it using an MPJet AC 26/45-20 D with a gearbox and ThunderPower 2100 mAh 11.1v battery and 11x4.5 prop. It is more than enough power for near verticle climb outs! And, I don't use full throttle. This motor is about $70. I am using a 40amp ESC with it.
Just giving you some info. This should do the job.
Good luck!
edit: that motor price is motor with gearbox. comes that way.

Ok, now I have to check that out. I was going to go with an AXI outrunner at $89.99 plus another $14.99 for the radial mount, but for $35.00 it's worth checking into. Now I have something else to procrastinate about. LOL
Thanks, Chuck.
