Which Traxxas to start with?
Hi,
Looking to spend $300-450 to start. That can be out of the box total or out of the box + a few upgrades, but trying not to go too crazy until I figure out what will edge out my friend. We're planning to get RC trucks in the spring 2023 as an annual new thing. We've been looking at the Traxxas models in the price range, but I have no clue if there's something better for the same money. I tinker and will end up modifying and upgrading whatever I get so I want to start with something that won't end up wasting money as I upgrade. Likewise, we don't need to go too crazy with these. I want there to be some competition with options for us to upgrade parts and edge each other out from week to week. Keep it competitive without breaking the bank.
Thanks for any model suggestions or tips for upgrades that are either valuable or wasteful.

Traxxas has an entry level line - Rustler, Bandit, Stampede, Slash. These are all 2wd. These models with the brushless motors are just under $300. But then you need at least one battery and a charger. Thats pushing $100 right there. Your probably going to want a soldering iron and solder if you dont have that already.
Just about all of those also come in a 4x4 version starting at $400 and addons from there. There are a few other versions and iterations. Check out amainhobbies.com for the complete selection of those and others. Amain is a reputable site with decent prices most of the time. Good starting point for shopping at the least.
Just about all of these come in a brushed setup also. Honestly, you'll get bored with those in a hurry. But the starting cost is lower.
Another brand to check out is Arrma. I dont have any Arrma models myself, but they seem to be really really popular right now.
As far as Traxxas goes, probably not top of the line in rc world, but they have been around a long time. I got my kid a Rustler back in '08. Still has it, it's been run within the past month. The aftermarket is pretty big for them and you can find parts in nearly any hobby shop.
