Default T-2 Buckeye from Air-C-Race

Hello!

A while ago I started to work on a T-2 Buckeye from Air-C-Race. The Buckeye is manufactured in 1/4,5 scale. Weight will be something around 21kgs dry, which means I have to pay attention keep the weight limit of 25kg here in Germany. Like the F-89 Scorpion (build here on forum), the Buckeye is primarily designed as a Twin engine jet, however I will pick a single Behotec JB-220 with bifurcated pipe as powerplant. Retracts will be from Behotec as well, since the C50 E-tracts are working flawlessly on the Scorpion. The build itself is almost finished, so I will posting pictures along with some information about the bird, if you guys are interested.

Really difficult was the choice of the right color scheme. There are not that many full size variants to choose from, so I decided to paint her in a Vietnam / Wild Weasel camo scheme.

Currently fitting out retracts and lights. Fuselage is somewhat finished and painted already. I will post pictures later today!

/T

Mk,

Looks awesome! Do you happen to know the weight of your T2? I really like the US Navy scheme the way you finished it. Too late though for mine, paint is already dry!

Thanks Malcom! That's a great value I think!

Here are some pics of the early stages of finishing the T2 with speed brakes and gear doors on the fuselage somewhat pre-installed. I use black paint to shade some parts of the plane and also salt+water mixture above a layer of silver base coat to imitate chipped of paint. Once the water is dry and all paint has been applied, the salt can be peeled off.

I use two servos on the speed brakes but I might change to electric actuators from Behotec (when they become available).

Here are a few shots of my first flight I built the plane and did the maiden without painting anything. Just some dayglow orange squares to visually check the buckeye took off very quickly , maybe fifty yards or so and climbed like a helicopter I fed in loads of down and put the take off flap up and she flew on rails so positive in the air very little corrective trim and loads of power I'm perfectly sure it would fly on one turbine no problem I took the plane up high and tried the landing flap setting Wow before I could do anything she put her nose up vertical and stalled I put the nose down and got the flap off and leveled off ... Way too much flap at 45 degrees maximum needed to slow it up is 30 degrees ans five percent down trim . After the second flight I stripped everything out and begun the preparation for the paint... I used Ppg auto paint base coat and clear and the decals were made by Ralf at Tailormade

Malcolm,

Do you think it would fly okay with two P100s? Just thinking about my next warbird...

Malcolm,

I am glad that you have successfully flown the T2. Apparently at least one other Buckeye in Europe didn't survive the maiden due to similar circumstances. It was either way too much thrust on takeoff or issues with the huge flaps. I am working towards a CG of 1cm in front of the main wing tube. Do you use the same CG?

One problem I see is that at approx 4,4lbs of lead is necessary in the nose to balance the main fuel tank behind the CG (cg measure when tank is full). I plan to move the fuel tank forward. No problem since I only have one turbine and lots of space available. Do you fly the stock tank setup with 6 litres capacity?

Thanks

T

Wxman2. Yes definitely two 140 ,s are over kill I only used 1/3 throttle to fly and 2/3 for take off so roughly 40 lbs would be ample it has a giant wing MK

Heer that looks beautiful shame to sell such a lovely plane!
Tuggs. ,I flew with the cg on the front tube center line with no weight in the nose , but I did have four life batteries and both air trap header tanks and the two fuel pumps mounted all in the nose,!MK
Heer I love the cockpit in your plane where did you get it .?p

Hi!

Time for a little update.

Finally got the whole bird painted and weathered last week. Also applied a thin layer of clear coat before the rest of the decals come in. I will post pictures of the turbine and pipe installation next. Still tricky is the installation of the flap servos and I would be happy if other T2 owners could post a picture or two on how they installed theirs.

cheers

I, and how I bear with my reluctance to mount and fit strut covers (particularly large ones)

Works like a charm. I 3D printed clamps for the struts to move the strut covers. Worked out pretty well but I still need to take some pictures of it.

Hi!

i saw pics of a T-2 at Florida Jets. Has it flown? Maybe there are pics and videos....

Our T2 is almost finished now. I am still wondering about the correct CG. We are moving our fuel tanks in front of the wing spar. Is 1cm ahead of the wing tube really the correct CG? Seems very forward to me.

Regards

T

Malcolm flew it late Saturday evening and was having some problem with...(MY OPINION)..cg and flutter issue. I try to video the video the flight but was more concerned about it landing in one piece.

This is my T2buckeye and it's from air-c-race in Germany Michael Sieck is the manufacturer and yes I did fly it at FJ 2014 during the flight a wheel well door flew off and after three or four circuits it looked like the right aileron fluttered , all of this my fault as the builder the aileron did not flutter it was a small sheet of 10 thou G10 that I had placed inside the aileron as a cover and it fluttered its way out and fell to the ground when I saw this I wanted to get the plane down as fast as possible so I tried to land without the flaps asI had a bad experience once before when the plane pitched up dramatically anyway it was a mistake as the buckeye never slowed down at all it just kept flying till it touched grass and bounced back into the air minus the nose gear and she flew on landing in a patch of long grass and flipped over fortunately without much damage at all. And easily repairable however the CG was set exactly on the center line of the wing tube and that was ok the plane was very sensative to aileron input needs very little movement and was hopelessly out of trim at take off when we managed to get it flying straight the incident occurred and had to put it down . I am working on the repairs as I speak it will be back in the air soonfile:///Users/user/Desktop/get-attachment-1.aspx.jpegfile:///Users/user/Desktop/get-attachment.aspx.jpeg

Malcom,

I am glad you managed to get the Buckeye back to the ground without much damage. I read that the manufacturer recommends 1cm ahead of the wing tube as CG which I think is quite nose-heavy... So do you think the CG on center point is spot on or would you move it forward?

Thanks

Hello Malcolm, hello Tuggs,

we did test the T2 with 2 x IQ Hammer 180+ Engines and the CG on the Center of the tube... Kids... do not try this at home... when Malcolm talkes on his 140 s from way to much power... then you can think what we have done with the twoo 180 s... each with more than 20 Kg on Thrust... on the flights we see we had to trim down at all flights, so we changed the CG a bit and built an T2 with an single 180 and an Y-thrust pipe wich still startet like pulled on an bungee.... so when we talk about CG... my opinion was something between center of tubing and 1 cm in front of... so this is an range from 30 mm... so center of wing tube is fine, maybe a bit forward... so 8-10 mm... also depends where you plan to have your tank... We build an other T2 with 2 x 90 IQ Hammer, we will test fly and post the setup here in RCU. We try to do this before end of march... Weather is getting better, so I think we can do it. Also we are on make an new Tank since the one we have in the moment is to big and to far in the back... I let you know about. Thank you all.

I was happy with the CG where it is on the tube center. but that is a matter of choice for the pilot how you are comfortable with the feel of the plane in the air .I liked it where I had it.... fine by me, I was surprised how sensitive the ailerons were for such a big heavy plane even with a small movement.
