Default Newbie Question

I probably know the answer but id thought id ask. Have bought an old Tamiya Frog, and then an old Grasshopper. All was fine with the Frog running a new 2700ma 7.2v battery etc, with its old charger, and it was taking over night to charge and worked fine. I then bought the grasshopper and that needed a new battery and then I decided on a new charger as recommended by the shop. I charged the grasshopper new battery and thats fine, used same charger on the frog battery smoke starts coming from its external resisitor and then i think its blown and basically runs the back wheels flat out until I pull the battery.

I take it the resistor is gone?

The charger is a powerpal set to 3.0A

Should I change the set up in the frog to loose the resistors ? or just replace them, and if so how do I not blow it again, set to 1.0A?

Cant work it out, but the Grasshopper is flying soo much faster than the Frog.....Great cars love the old school,

I can sen pics of what i have to help, I have a spare controller...

Also I need different crystals I have brown currently for both whats the best opposite colour to get ?/

Im new and learning.....please help.

PS im an avid Porsche and BMW fan, so if you have any questions about cars I can help !!

Tom

Is your new battery a 7.4V lipo? If so, charging a NiCad or nimh battery with a charger set for LIPO battery charge will overcharge it, causing it to vent, smoke, and potentially catch fire.

Those resistors only have so much life in them. You get a crack in one, and they go down hill real fast; from what I remember. I know I went through a lot during very cold weather runs...like running in snow . If you like only having three speeds; dealing with mechanical speed controls, and having to use extra servo...then just replace the resistors. You are running a separate receiver battery I take it? I'd seriously would consider an ESC with BEC, and be done with it. I think that would simplify things a lot IMO.

Man, I forgot how huge receivers were back in the day .

You will find all the crystals you want on eBay.

The condition of the used buggy could be partly responsible for the little white bricks (resistors) not being up to par. I think it's just a coincidence that using a new charger on a battery, and you started to see smoke. I've put 7 cell packs through them speed control resistors, and had no problems, except running in snow.

The ESC (Electronic Speed Control) in picture 6...no idea what make that is. Maybe someone will stop by and see it and it will "click" what model of speed control that is, then you can search for the manual. If wanting a new ESC down the road sometime, have a look at a HobbyWing Quicrun 1060.

Are you running the original Tamiya silver can motor? If so, then the ESC you show will be fine.

If you are not running the original motor, I need to know what motor it is to determine whether or not the ESC will work ok.
