Default Safety Concerns?

This is at an AMA field, folks. Any opinions?

Oh Karl, let me introduce myself, as posts like yours are why I got interested in the online side of RC Stuff in the first place. Which part was the safety concern for you? I've seen $25,000 RC Jets come apart mid-flight going nearly 200 miles per hour at "AMA Fields", I'm interpreting from your post that you are suggesting that this redneck model is maybe less engineered than something say, "more engineered", but I'd rather allow you to expand on your thoughts there a little as to the "Safety Concerns". I'm Sean and I love to debate online.

What makes you think that's at an "AMA Field" ?

If its not an AMA field, its one of the nicest non-AMA fields I have ever seen.
But yes, this video scares the crap out of me. I'm more concerned for their safety than anything else (or should I say "lack of safety"). No way he would have been able to fly that plane at our field (not where anyone would have seen it fly). Let alone start it up.

It's not an AMA field, nor member that I'm aware of, and I've been to nicer private fields than that but I can see the incorrect assumption.

You know I try my best to stay off these threads, but this one just needed a comment. If it is a private field and/or his property he can do what he wants, but it is still scary. The reason its scary is this reminds me of the idiots with quadcopters who flew them near or in the path of full scale airplanes. Just imagine if he had lost control and it hit someone NOT in his little group of minions. The headline would have read, "Person seriously hurt by radio control Airplane". It would not have said, "Person seriously hurt by radio control airplane flown at unlicensed field by non AMA member who did not have the necessary experience."

EVERYONE who flies radio controlled would be held responsible for this guys need to be popular on youtube and we are already complaining about the FAA imposing rules that are stupid. If this had gone wrong it would have just given them more fuel for their fire.

I'm all for guys having fun but come on, no vent, no fire extinguisher? I mean, NO VENT?? He didn't even know how to disable the gyro. Hey yall, hold my beer. I think the funniest part was when the guy asked if the vent was open.

Well, you asked for an opinion, so here it is.

Safety concern issue with this crash is the builder, that highly modified a foam airplane to be overpowered with a jet turbine. Also, add the pilot as the major safety concern, that flew it beyond limits until it fall apart mid air. He was quite looking for a wing failure by the way he flew it.

As a third safety concern, I would add the guy that puts at risk all jet model flyers and responsible flyers, by posting this crash on youtube.

Hope you had fun, though

BR

Nuno

This was funny. But no CO2 fire extinguisher, no manual valve as far as I can tell, and may I guess no turbine waiver?

The problem with these videos is that more people will try to do similar things and when a significant accident occurs we will all be on the hot seat.

Wish they would have produced the same video with a little more focus on safety.

Don't forget no brakes and no true rudders. I also wonder if he had the failsafe set on the turbine and having as second person control a separate throttle seems a bit sketch.
Thanks,

well, at least now, the guys that are contemplating 30-45 size turbine conversion of this foam airplane know where to beef up the structure.

Hey, it’s Florida, the Freedom state or just recently, I prefer the sunshine state. Totally ridiculous but it is what it is. Let them lose the field. That stunt wouldn’t be tolerated in our field.

Reminds me of what teenage boys would do. We all did dumb things as teenagers. With a great Florida school system education, smarts and common sense weren’t taught. A lot of this stuff was done before video phones. Now it is captured on videos for all to criticize.

Cleetus is a fine guy and youtuber, and he is just playing around with a foamie and some mods with a turbine.. not a big deal. Probably his video is helping a lot on teaching the masses on why a foamie is not a quite suitable airframe for a turbine.

That flutter was wild to watch! haha

I am sure he is a nice guy and for sure the videos are fun to watch. I do not mean to take anything away from that, trying new things, or pushing the envelope. However, this does not excuse the irresponsibility of his actions and the risks he placed upon his field and fellow pilots. Its hard enough to get more fields that allow turbines and actions like this reflect upon all of us. Not just him or that field. Just like a couple of irresponsible people who purchased drones with no AMA, experience, regard for safety or common sense, flew irresponsibly and caused a bunch of new rules and regulations that affect all of us who actually respect and follow the system. But that's just my two cents.

I doubt this. If anything is teachable here, its his whole video (how not to fly rc). Turbine wasn't installed correctly, not even close. Based on his video I doubt he has his turbine waiver, he broke several rules. Matter of fact it looked like common sense was thrown out the window. Being a good guy is no excuse to risk peoples safety.

Not trying to be harsh here. Just worried that this is a common occurence at this site. I'm no safety expert, and I do not mind if I get called out on doing something questionable. The goal is to go out, have a good time, and no one gets hurt doing so.

Bottom line. The AMA safety code is now an FAR. If you violate it you can be hammered by the FAA. If you are not an AMA member or not following the AMA safety code you are now flying under part 107, now the price of poker goes up to as much as $250k fine and 10 years in jail for doing stupid stuff that hurts people or damages property.

Nothing will happen to him or his AMA club. Remember it’s Freedom Florida, anything goes!
