Default Repairing Fiberglass Cowl...

I had a little mishap with my plane and I want to repair the fiberglass Cowl. Its not in too bad of shape but there is fuel on it. How do I prep the surface to get the fuel off so that the resin will stick?

THanks

Jeff

Windex or alcohol or both are good for cleaning the fuel off. Afterwards I would give it a light sanding to rough it up a bit to give a good mating surface. Of course if its painted you need to sand that off as well.

Use HOT soap and water to remove the fuel. Dishwashing liquid is best for the soap and it removes oils very, very well. Scrub the area of the break on the inside with a stiff brush.

It is also important to know what the cowl is made of. Most polyester resins will not cure if laid up on epoxy glass structures.

Once you have it clean, be sure to use a small piece or two of 6 oz glass cloth to reinforce the repair.
