Default DA50 choke lever set-up

I'm installing my DA50 and am having a problem on how to set up the mechanism to turn the choke on/off. Initially it was thought I could simply run a lever or wire straight down from the choke straight down (vertically). The problem with this is that the muffler (pitts style) is in the way. I then thought of having a push rod, generally parallel to the throttle cable and having it exit outside the fuse with a small "handle'. This would enable me to "push" or "pull" to activate the choke. Problem with this set up is that nyrod is simply not rigid enough as it takes quite a bit of force to move the choke to the on or off position. I don't want to use a metal or carbon fiber rod for fear of carrying ignition electrical noises to the radio compartment of the plane. I am curious what other users are doing in this situation.
Thanks for reading this...

If you take the ball and spring detent out of the carb the choke will operate just like the throttle, no effort at all..Won't take much of a pushrod to operate it.....

Default DA50 choke linkage problem

RC:
It always amazes, surprises, and humbles me how some people are so much brighter than I am! Your suggestion is a great one, but it concerns me that there should be some sort of stop to hold the choke plate in position, especially when the choke is off. I thought about cutting the spring shorter reduce the force to move the choke, but still have enough tension to hold the plate in the desired position, especially when the engine is running normally? If the choke plate flipped down while engine is running, I'm sure it would flood out.
Thanks for your helpful reply.

Hey cajuncharly, if you cut the little choke arm off and install a steering arm in place you will have a lot more leveage to operate with the spring intact. My DA 50 is in an extra, I have a small size nyrod running stright back for about 6 ins then goes down underneath where I can operate it. If you send me your e-mail address I will send a pic, I dont know how to attach a pic here.

Default Choke solution...

I had the same question about 2 months ago. You'll find that thread if you look. The best way is the steering arm suggestion, after grinding off the short choke arm. I ended up doing it this way, then running a flex cable back about 2 inches and routing it down along the firewall. This provides enough friction in the linkage that it stays put either in the open or closed position. (no servo needed.) Here is the picture from the previous thread that shows the set up.
BTW, it's a great running, smooth and powerful engine!

I used a bellcrank mounted at the firewall ( behind the engine box) and ran a rod down. This then cleared the Pitts muffler.

Making the bellcrank mount is the trick.

Default to k_hunt how to send picture

scroll down to attach file section, then click on the browse button
this will then let you go to your drive and pick the file/picture you want to attach. when done you will see the file in the previously
blank section. then click submit reply. You need to verify the file is smaller than 70k in size or it will not let you upload it or post it.

Default DA50 Choke lever setup

Many thanks for the suggestions received. I plan to implement the bellcrank method if I can figure out an easy way to mount the bellcrank, otherwise I will use a "curved" nyrod as suggested by K Hunt. One of the tangible benefits of this forum is the great ideas fellow modelers are willing to share!

Default DA50 choke lever set-up

ptebbe,

Did you have to cut a hole in the firewall to allow the carb to breath?

Default DA50 choke lever set-up

I saw deputydog's plane fly with that DA and it is SWEET.

For my DA50 on my DP Extra I'm using a manual choke.

I'm using a bellcrank mounted to a piece of hardwood block behind firewall in the engine box. Block size is about 1/2" x 1/2" x 1"

Rod runs from choke through firewall to bellcrank
then...
Nyrod runs from bellcrank to down through the engine box for manual choke.

sorry no pics... It's not pretty anyway.... just effective.

Default DA 50 in DP Extra

Azhar,
On the DP Extra, I decided to use the standard stand-offs and cut the engine box (approx 1/2".) I did cut a hole in the motorbox behind the carb for better breathing as the manual suggests, but the carb does not pass through it. Works quite well, and the installation is very clean. Ignition and battery are where the fuel tank used to be, the fuel tank is mounted over the gear for less effect on CG as the tank empties. Just for show and tell, here's the DA 50 next to the Saito 1.80 it replaced.

Thanks Ptebbe,

From the earlier pic you posted, it did not look like you made any hole behind the carb. Thanks for the info. It is a very nice looking engine.
