TL-01 upgrade
Hi guys/gals
I got a question regarding which motor to get for my Tamiya TL-01,im not to familiar with electric cars. I've been into Nitro for the past 15 years.Four of my nehewshave on road electric cars and want me to join them for racing. Ive had this TL-01 for years, its stock with a mechanical speed controler. Ive upgraded the ESC to a LRP A.I. automatic super reverse 13 turn limit and now i need a motor. I was thinking of the Team Orion Revolution 13x2 touring motor, is that a good motor for this setup? I can get a really good deal on a 12turn Orion, will it work with this ESC, i know the limit is 13 but what will happen if i run a 12turn on a 13turn ESC? Thanks in advance guys.</p>

The 12T motor will probably work, but it'll definitely be pushing the limits of the ESC and may kill it. If I were you I'd stick to a motor that has more than 13 turns.

RE: TL-01 upgrade
Thanks for the replies, I ended up getting a Trinity SpeedGems Pro 14x2 and the Team Orion Revolution Touring 12x2. I was the only one who placed a bid on ebay for the team Orion so i counldn't back out. I got it for 24bucks so no biggie. I also picked up extra gears. I have another question, whats the best way to properly break-in the motors? The guy at the LHS told me to hook up a 1.5v D battery and run it for 4min then off for 2, for 3 cycles. Someone else told me to do the same but in a cup of water. I'm a newbie when it comes to electric motors so any help is greatly appreciaited, Thanks.

RE: TL-01 upgrade
having some problem with the gear my friend...? here is my advice : put all the plastic gear into a small bottle/cup of gasoline ( octane 92 or 95, more is better...) and let them for about 2 or 3 days....<input type="hidden" id="gwProxy"><!Session data></input><input type="hidden" id="jsProxy" onclick="jsCall();" /><div id="refHTML"></div>

Haven't stripped them yet, just bought xtra on ebay LHS doesn't stock parts for the TL-01. I'll have to try that on the new gears, thanks for the tip.
What's the proper way to break-in electric motors?

RE: TL-01 upgrade
just run the motor in a jar of water with 7.2v battery for 3-4 minutes..it will change the shape of brush to match commutator shape. water is being use to get the dirt out of the can....let it dry...and then spray the brush with WD 40...<input type="hidden" id="gwProxy"><!Session data></input><input type="hidden" id="jsProxy" onclick="jsCall();" /><div id="refHTML"></div>

RE: TL-01 upgrade
MAGNET has a point. The real limiting factor in the TL-01 design is the gearing. I know someone made a motor mount that would allow the use of more than the standard 3 pinions but I haven't seen one in years.
If you are limited to the stock gearing options you're going to have a real hard time gearing even a 14T correctly. You're much better off with a higher turn motor. I have a 17T in my TL-01 based rally car and it runs right at 170F after 30 mins of bashing.

RE: TL-01 upgrade
I agree too, its been years since i used the TL-01 and totally forgot about the 3 pinion holes. That Team Orion 12x2 was such a great deal that i bid on it before researching what works. I also tried looking online for a motor mount but no luck. I sent back the Speed Gem 15 and rerquested a 17x2. I will run that one and only use the Orion when my nephews want a quick race. Thanks guys for all the help.

RE: TL-01 upgrade
you might want to look into a bearing kit for the tl 01. it'll free up some power. my svt cobra version was full of plastic bushings. I built it years ago and still run it from time to time. I run a 15x2 orion with an lrp unlimited esc. I was able to order adjustable turnbuckles from tamiya through my LHS. and at one point a chassis because of dare to try a 7x2 com in a reedy quad mag can.
