I say still be carefull with grayhound.I had a whole plane, crate and everything disappear a few years back. and that was when they would only insure 300.00 they since have updated there tracking method and increased the insurance amount, but it is still a big risk.

I put lift straps all the way around the crate to make it easy for them to move. Risk of total destuction with forklift carrier versus the shipment disapear is much greater.

I'm doing the handle all over the box with blinds so no one can find out what is inside. Actually I'm doing a shipping box for a jet witch it's one piece .

Greyhound max insurance is $300.00 for anything that is longer than 300 miles, they have NO tracking so ifs missing in transit they will now know where it is.

Would it help to mount it on a cuto to size pallet as well? This way they have what they need to use a forklift? It looks intentional and I am surprised they try to deliver it like that.
I've used grayhound for a few jets bot sending and receiving and have had good luck. I am always at the 90 lb limit though with the amount of wood I use.

Few years back this is what USF roadway did to my Meister scale 109. Complete rebuild and she is still flying today.

I only use Uship now for white glove shipments. No more forward air or USF

also look at freightquote.com, just recently I bought a Kingcat, shipped from PA to La was only $323 that's for 2 boxes: 63x25x25 and 73x31x31 This is terminal to terminal shipping.

Shipper wanted it picked up at his residence so that added an additional $125.00...

$323 + $125 = $448 + the price to build 2 big boxes ... At least $550 total. Some one should set up a way to have modelers traveling long distances and room for the model to help out. I know for a couple hundred I could find room in my Trailer Twice a year on my Migration from Wisconsin to Arizona and back in the spring, I certainly don't have to carry 7 of my planes and all the extra stuff either. Maybe some one could start a forum on this subject. Even if your are traveling to a flyin it's to transport something for someone else ,,,,

No one wants the liability of these things breaking during transport, even in the best on intentions it can get ugly quickly, also $125.00 is only if you don't want to drop it off at the terminal and have there truck come and pick it up. But yes I agree there should be a better way, uship.com has white glove services, but these are all over the place I was getting quotes for $2200.00 for a 900 mile trip; these guys must be watching shippingwars on tv thinking those insane rates actually exsist in the real world.

For $2200 I could get a new trailer to deliver it on the way to anywhere.

I agree with Disco, if you were going to transport something get something in writing that you are not liable.
