Default Advice on RC for Xmas

OK, first post here and looks like a great bunch of guys. Looking at getting some advice on RC cars for my son, 12 years old, for Xmas. Iused to race locally some 20 years ago with a tricked out RC10, and just 3 years ago aquired a couple of RC18T that seem to need parts after every run, no bashing just street and camping dirt driving. So Ideceided to get the son a "real" RC for xmas. Ifell in love with the Traxxas Slash brushless one with the waterproof electronics and 2.4 radio. Still confused if I should get a 4x4 or 2wd? Iknow 2wd is less maientance and less to break. Also on the 2.4 radio can I run 2 cars at the same time?Or do they still use crystals? Any other RTR that is very reliable? Ilike the stadium style but I know he would like the monster truck.

no crystals the radio pairs with the receiver kinda like how bluetooth devices pair with each other.
So yes you can run many with each other.
I'd stick with traxxas with him personally. Stampede for monster truck or rustler for stadium truck. There is a 4wd pede coming out soon supposedly.

4wd IMO. Much more predictable driving and much better offroad, depending of course on where he plans to drive it. Traxxas line is great IMO for beginners.

Go with traxxas. their parts are plentyful, and their RCs are very durable. 2wd is cheaper, but 4wd is easier to drive, and better in off road situations.

slash 4x4 is 4wd, rustler is rwd

All current traxxas have the waterproof electronics FYI

The 4wd pede is based off the slash 4x4. Main differences I could see from pics are tire size, chassis, body posts, and body.

All these Slash 4x4 models are starting to look the same, and the website doesn't help for a comparison. I'm looking at the Traxxas Slash 4X4 VXL 2.4GHz RTR w/7-Cell & Charger TRA6808. Seems it includes the waterproof stuff, Brushless setup, 2.4 transmitter and a nice painted body.

So these "brushless" motors setups, I assume they require a lot less maintenance?

yup no cutting comm's, wearing out brush's breaking new brushes in etc
Only thing you wear out are the bearings.
