Default Gear ratio question,more or less top end.

48T spur 18T bell,48T spur 16T bell,wich would give more top end? Thanks.Oh this is what last night brought.Wont be running it any time soon.

When Spur stays the same, more teeth on bell always = more speed (if the engine can pull it)

When bell stays the same, less teeth on spur always = more speed (if the engine can pull it)


When you change the final gear ratio to a higher gear (lower number), it makes the engine work harder. So its possible you can just lose speed if the engine doesnt have the power to pull the RPM to exceed what you were running previously.

Spur / Pinion =
48 / 18 = 2.667*
48 / 16 = 3

For every revolution of the spur gear the pinion will need to turn two and three quarter times* with an eighteen tooth pinion, or three times with a sixteen tooth pinion.

*......rounded.

This is very true. Sometimes you can get more topspeed from gearing down as it lets the engine build more rpms and hence more top speed. Here's a graph to shows how you can lose speed when either under geared or ovr geared:

Well thanks,all.See right now it has a 58T Integy and a 16T Integy,really lot of low end.

Stock (factory) what it originaly had !!! I'm quite sure you knew what i ment.
