Gearing question
I have a Trinity Speed Gems Tinanite 15t 540 with a XL-5 speed control and stock 18t pinion in my Stampede. I was recently given a 28t pinion (I know, significantly larger). What will happen if I use this? I know it'll go faster, but will I fry my motor? or my ESC?
I'm going to try it regardless but would like some input. I've heard the motor will easily overheat if I use this setup, but of also heard that for onroad applications it works fine.

RE: Gearing question
I've used that motor several times in different trucks including a Pede. At 18/87 you are already seriously over geared and i'm sure you have noticed the motor running extremely hot. For general bashing the truck should be geared somewhere around 12/87 or 13/87 and you should monitor the motor temps. If the creep much over 160F you need to drop down on the gearing even more.
If you plan to simply do a couple of speed runs then go ahead and install the 28T pinion but the motor will most likely get over the 160F mark in just a couple of short passes.
If you try to run that pinion for general bashing you will burn the motor up and could damage the ESC.

RE: Gearing question
Definetely a big jump in final. You currently have a 13.1 final (87/18*2.72), going to 28t pinion would change it to a 8.45 final.
Going to a 76 spur, would make your final even higher (7.38). In order to not make a real big jump in final with using the 28 pinion, you need to go UP in tooth count on the spur, which may not be able to even happen.
110 spur / 28 pinion * 2.72 trans = 10.49 final
120 spur / 28 pinion * 2.72 trans = 11.65 final
130 spur / 28 pinion * 2.72 trans = 12.62 final
This is just to show you final's that would be close to what you already have. Probably dont even have spur gears that high available? If you want to use the 28 pinion... id get the biggest spur you can get, and maybe go to smaller tires to lessen the load on the motor.

The largest spur you can use on the Pede is 90T. You would have to run touring car tires to get the ration even close. The 28 tooth is not an option for anything other than a quick one or two lap speed run. As I said earlier it's already over geared at 18/87.

RE: Gearing question
I finally got a chance to try it out (snow melted). It worked great for speed runs, unbelievable top-end speed (had to be 40+ mph with a 6-cell NiMH pack). Not bad for an XL-5.
As said earlier, motor and esc got pretty warm, but that was after 10 minutes of driving it. I'll definitly be changing the gearing back for some bashing, but it was fun trying it.
