Default Why I keep blowing up ESC'S???

I blew up a 79 dollar phoenix 25 last night because even after checking several times, still the esc battery connect did not have the correct polarity for the battery and I noticed smoke coming from the esc but it was too late. A chip came unsoldered. So while waiting for a new phoenix 10 to come in I installed me old stock motor and esc. I was running from a power supply for a while and everything seemed to work fine. Then I tried to run off a battery. Then once connected the same thing happened. I am positive this time that the polarity was correct. This was the same Nimh battery that shorted when connected to the old esc. Could a bad battery cause such a thing to happen. Im nervous, frustrated, and pissed, I just blew 100 dollars of electronics. HELP!!!
