RE: what emaxx did i buy
I just got a nice #3906 E maxx off craigslist. That model I believe is one of the first ones made. You can upgrade parts on it, but if you plan to beef up the motor to brushless you will need a new trans and diffs. The older models trans/diffs aren't "brushless ready" according to Traxxas.. .
I'm in the process of deciding what I want to do with mine. I'm considering puting a single 775 brushed motor in for now like the Summit which would give my E maxx more torque but less top-end speed. My LHS has a Castle 1/8 brushless system for $149 that would be perfect for the E maxx, but that would mean I'd need to spend alot more time/money to make sure the gears can handle the torque. I guess I can't speak from experience though, maybe the diffs would be fine, but I've been reading that you'll be stripping gears in a heartbeat if you don't adjust the mechanical aspects properly.
Rather than searching google for info, check out youtube and type in something like "traxxas 3906" and similar subjects. I've learned alot about upgrade options for the E maxx from watching youtube videos.

Also the stock ESC for the #3906 model is only rated for 14.4v, but I've been running 16.8v (two 7-cells) and it works great, it's literally more than enough power with a stock setup.
