fast turbine start up
After the introduction of this new turbine start up philosophy published on this forum few time ago, http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10714066/tm.htm
today I have been starting the test on a boomerang sprint. I made two complete flights and lot of starts for incoming informations about reliability of this system.
I enclouse two videos:
1) turbine start http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kaM8...e_gdata_player

2) take off http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfOlJ...e_gdata_player

The turbine is a KJ66 upgraded to a Eagle
Electric starter is a permax 280bb
all the electronic, single electrovalve and pump are inside the turbine cover
combustion chamber and injectors are original

RE: fast turbine start up
Sorry, but I don't mind aspects other than technical one
I'd like to explain a little bit better this new start up philosophy, for the people that are curios to understand how it works.
This system differs from the standard kerosene start because it doesn't have the burner fuel line.
The flame departs direct from the main needle!
Obviously a particular prewarmer system has been designed to obtain this result.
Follows the Ecu sequence:
1) The electric motor run the turbine at about 3.000
2) In the meantime departs the heat 1 phase
3) as soon as the current needed for the heat1 decreases departs the heat 2 and the electric motor starts to accelerate the turbine as much as possible (maximum motoring)
4) at this point, the pump runs for 2 seconds with higher voltage than requested (to permits unlock the gear) than reduce to the preselected value
5) the electrovalve starts cicle.
6) As soon as the temperature rises of about 4° from the 2seconds previous reading the electrovalve increases the % ON and decreases the % OFF
10) at 12.000 rpm the prewarmer heating it is switched off
11) at 22.000 rpm the electric motor disengages from turbine
12) the rest is equal to other turbines
As introduced at the beginning of this thread to permits this system to work, is essential that:
1) the electric motor should be of very high quality
2) the battery shoul have a good discharge current of about 15A for few seconds
3) the wire from battery to turbine if longer than 30 cm should be 4mm square to avoid drop voltage
4) the Ecu should be able to manage 15A without interfere with its functioning dew to pwm frequency
5) Because the pump and the solenoid valve are inside the frontale case the tube from the hopper tank to the turbine should be at least 6mm outside to avoid pump cavitation
I enclouse a couple of inside Boomerang Sprint pics.
Winter condition and seasons of flights will be necessary to confirm or no the system reliablility.
Sorry for the english and for long post
Santino
P.S. the R&S TECHNOLOGY is just a joke. It is the name of my nephew Riccardo (he helped me in the develop of firmware over the last 4 years) and mine Santino, nothing of commercial
