Had my first fully susecessful flights with the Tucano. I was having issues with my multi valve from Dreamworks and was not able to get gear to retract during flight and was having issues with the gear retracting when turning on reciever. After several of you attempted to help me out in NC first in flight unsuccessfully I contacted Todd and he swapted it out for a new one. That was the ticket and now it is working well and I am very greatful with the continued service that Todd provides.

Awesome...congrats! I was bummed when you could not get the gear working at FIF but am glad to see it sailing right along now. I'm picking mine back up from Steve Burnett tomorrow with the new Jetcat V3 installed. By watching your vid as well as a couple of others...I know I am going to be beyond pleased with the performance of the new motor. Sweet...

RE: Comp-Arf Tucano Turboprop
After having two great days of flying at the Great American Jet Rally my third day with the Tucano ended abruptly. I took off as normal and after making a full pattern my spotter yelled out," are we on fire." The glare didn't allow me to see that but all of a sudden I heard a loud pop and realize I was without power. Fortunately it was in an area that allowed me to land normally. When it past by it was evident that I had shed a prop but didn't notice the wing damage until I got closer.
When I got home the next day and removed the turbine I was able to see that the turbine was internally damaged and it seems like rear blades are destroyed. the pieces are wedge into the secondary turbine which most likely was why the prop seperated.

I will send the turbine to Bob at Jetcat and I am sure he will take care of the turbine. I don't have any explanation as to the cause, but I have had no propblems of any type will the engine until this. I will fix the wing and hopefully be flying the Tucano angain soon. I love this airplane and it seems people watching enjoy seeing and hearing the Tucano fly.

Scott,
Bummer! In the grand scheme of things it sounds like you came out OK with the prop departing. I can tell you first hand that if you have a deadstick (I have had two...one when the gearbox exploded with a prior manufacturer and at Kentucky when I ran out of gas...yes...I know...IDIOT!) and the prop windmills...you do not glide...you auto rotate.
I have 22 flights so far on my V3 Jetcat and it's as solid as a rock. It sounds like the engine conked out and took the gearbox with it from how you describe it. I dialed my turbine RPM down a little because I could hear it hitting the limiter in flight and did not want to jack the prop RPM up to the moon so I set the prop to 7750 and lowered the turbine RPM to 167,000.
What were your settings?

RE: Comp-Arf Tucano Turboprop
I maidened my Tucano last week which was a partly success - one of the main gears didn't come down. It got stuck on either the air ram for the gear door or a cable tie.
I have a Tamjet gear failsafe installed which activated and with 4 bars on the gear door, the gear couldn't retract by gravity.
The model only sustained minor kosmetic damage to the rear fuselage, rudder and left aileron.
The model flies like a dream. I had the turbine set a 170.000 and the prop at 8500 - is that too high?
I've a Biela 24/12 prop installed but I think it maxes out too early. It was measured at 210 km/h. I'll try a 24/14 prop. Does anybody have any experience with a 24/14 prop with the SPT5 V3?
Here are a few pictures of the model. The pilots and cockpit are from Maff'sCAV.

RE: Comp-Arf Tucano Turboprop
I'm running the 24x14 Engle with SPT5V3 motor still at 165k, prop pulls 7200 in the air and 6300 on the ground. Excellent prop just a bit too quiet..... Plane is great just struggling to get smoke working, just can't seem to atomise it enough or not enough heat.

RE: Comp-Arf Tucano Turboprop
Thanks for the pictures, Carsten.
Bart, I also had trouble getting the smoke to work at first until we turned the smoke nozzles, so they point inwards in the exhaust instead of outwards. Still need to move the nozzles a bit further out since the smoke turns greyish at high power settings.
Regarding the 24/14 prop, I really don't want the plane to lose the sound from the prop, so maybe I should stick with the 24/12. Do you get tips get supersonic with the 24/14 prop?

Based on prop diameter of 24" @ 7200 rpm then tip speed is only 826 kph, SoS is 1236 kph, so we would need 10,700 rpm, Besides Engle have gone to a lot of trouble to design the tips to be quiet. Ali Machinchy in Englang claimed that he picked up a big speed increase from the Biela to Engle as well as better rpm, I reckon he is certainly right.</div></span>

Smoke looks great, can you pass on how you have your injectors setup, design as well as what fluid you are using??
Thanks

RE: Comp-Arf Tucano Turboprop
After 4 months finally got the turboprop back from jetcat. For some reason they sent it all the way back to Germany and don't know where it sat but just got it returned. They put a new turbine on and repaired prop shaft and she runs like a top. The only problem now is that they did not send me a prop bolt or washer. I have her ready to retest once I get that and we get some good weather.
The wing repair went well and should be just as strong or more than the original. A bit of a pain but the latex paint make the blending the new paint with the old a cinche.
